CITY OF HENDERSONVILLE TREE BOARD City Operations Center 305 Williams Street Hendersonville, NC 28791 Monday, September 09, 2024 – 2:30 PM MINUTES MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: LYNDSEY SIMPSON, JANET THEW, MARY DAVIS, BECCA DOLL, NATALIE WILCOXEN, MELODY CRAWFORD, GLENN LANGE. MEMBERS NOT IN ATTENDANCE: SCOTT HARMON. 1. CALL TO ORDER 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion to approve: Becca Doll Second: Natalie Wilcoxen Motion approved 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. Minutes for August 12, 2024 Motion to approve: Mary Davis Second: Glenn Lange Motion approved 4. NEW BUSINESS A. Public Relations Report - Mary Jo Padgett REPORT TO: Hendersonville Tree Board FROM: Mary Jo Padgett, PR Consultant RE: Publicity Report for Sept. Board meeting DATE: September 9, 2024 Publicity/ events since last board meeting -- Tree Board newsletter – writing, editing, layout, photos, approvals for specific copy, compilation of email addresses, etc. Final version sent to M. Stierwalt to email. Oct. guided walk – took photos to use in PR/newsletter TREE BOARD – September 09, 2024 Page | 1 Maple St. Farmers Market – took photos at TB booth Banner for TB booth events – worked with Glenn Lange to design and submit the banner for production at UPS print dept. It’s in production now and will be ready for use at Farm-City Day event, Oct. 5. Symbolic Monarch Migration event – created/wrote PR for the TB newsletter, City website, and general media. This is part of the Bee City USA-Hendersonville program, which falls within the Tree Board’s jurisdiction. The ESB budgeted money to pay for registration for citizens/students living in the City of Hendersonville. The news release was recently sent to Tree Board members. Glenn Lange’s article for Tree Board webpage – I helped Glenn with the article as editor. Upcoming Calendar of Events -- HENDERSONVILLE TREE BOARD CALENDAR 2024 Saturday, October 5 – Farm-City Day. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jackson Park. Glenn is signed up for tabling at this event. Sunday, October 13 – Explore Brooklyn Creek Restoration Project. 2 p.m. Meet at Sullivan Park pavilion in Green Meadows Community. Park along Martin Circle. (Rain date: Sun., Oct. 20, 2 p.m.) Mike Huffman, the City’s project manager for this extensive stream restoration project, will explain not only the project – which uncovered portions of the stream long forgotten – but also the relevance of the stream in the history of this community. A restored Bird Sanctuary, restoration of the natural meandering stream, streambank plantings, and upcoming community involvement will be discussed during this less-than-1/2-mile stroll. Fall -- NeighborWoods Tree Plantings – Natalie W, Mary D., Melody C. are developing this. B. Shirts for Board Members Mark Stierwalt will suggest a few options for different shirts for presenting and tabling and volunteer t-shirts. C. City Council Update - Lyndsey Simpson 5. OLD BUSINESS A. Native Plant Policy Discussion – Lyndsey Simpson will convey the Tree Board’s vision of the document to the ESB and then table it until the UDO process is underway so that all of the ordinances with use the same language. She also said she would like for the council to focus on invasive species in the mean time. B. Farm City Day TREE BOARD – September 09, 2024 Page | 2 Janet T., Natalie W., and Glenn L. will table at the event C. NeighborWoods Three of the five groups that were interested are not returning calls and emails. So there are currently two neighborhoods interested. Mark S. will reach out to the communications team to about promoting the program on social media. The trees will be delivered to the Grounds crew on 10/24 and delivered to the sites on 10/25. Saddlebrook and druid Hills are the two neighborhoods signed up.. 6. OTHER BUSINESS A. Heritage Trees Discussion – The board was updated on the program and decided to promote the idea again and reinvigorate the program. B. Vote to Change the meeting room from the Assembly Room to the Second Floor Conference Room in the City Operations Building. Motion to Approve: Mary D. Second: Glenn L. Motion Approved C. Staff Comments Losing some oaks and a pine in Oakdale. Requested Community Development included the Tree Board in the UDO formulation process and Tree Board involvement. 7.
