Public Relations Update - Mary Jo Padgett Submitted by Mary Jo Padgett REPORT TO: Hendersonville Tree Board FROM: Mary Jo Padgett, PR Consultant RE: Publicity Report for September Board meeting DATE: September 20 2022 Publicity/ events since last board meeting -- Bee City USA projects have been busy since last board meeting. I wrote and sent several news releases concerning Monarch Month and Monarch Migration programs in Sept. as well as for the film screening of My Garden of a Thousand Bees coming in late October. The tree identification walk along the Oklawaha on Oct.8, sponsored by the Tree Board and Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway was also sent out to early publications. TREE BOARD - REGULAR MEETING – September 20, 2022 Page | 1  Upcoming Calendar -- HENDERSONVILLE TREE BOARD CALENDAR 2022 Thurs., September 22 – A Monarch’s Migration program. 2-3:30 p.m. Bullington Gardens. Estela Romero, monarch educator and journalist who works in the overwintering sanctuaries near her home in Angangueo, Michoacán, Mexico, and Kim Bailey, local educator and farmer/owner of Milkweed Meadows Farm in Fruitland, NC, will present up-close and personal views of the monarch’s remarkable life cycle and epic migration. Mid-Sept.-Oct. 7 – Symbolic Monarch Migration program. Local classrooms, youth organizations, and individual students are invited to join this international program. Saturday, October 1 -- Farm City Day. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jackson Park. Hendersonville Bee City USA will man a table/tent with pollinator and gardening information. Tree Board brochures will be offered as well. Saturday, October 8 – Native Tree Walk Along the Oklawaha Greenway. 10 – 11:30 a.m. Co- sponsored by Hendersonville Tree Board and Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway. Leader, Kristin Kelly, Henderson Co. forest ranger with NC Forest Service. Meet at Patton Park at the covered gazebo beside the basketball court. Tree Board brochures will be available. Thursday, October 20 – Film, “My Garden of a Thousand Bees.” 6:30 p.m. Thomas Auditorium, Blue Ridge Community College. Hendersonville Bee City partnering with BRCC to present this outstanding award-winning documentary. Fall NeighborWoods projects -- Dates TBA. During four winter months, 7 trees near the Historic Train Depot on Maple St. will be wrapped in decorative, colorful yarn by the STEAD organization. This art installation was approved by the Tree Board. B. Lakewood Apartments (CZD) - Travis Fowler, First Victory Construction Motion proposed by Glenn Lange 2nd by Mary Davis Approved Unanimously Tree Board Motion for Lakewood Apartments Based on the submitted plans to the Tree Board, dated 9/2/22, we recommend the following: 1. A number of the proposed saved trees are Bradford Pears. The Tree Board recommends that they be removed and replaced with appropriate native medium maturing trees as long as replacement does not injure surrounding trees and are appropriate for the site. Otherwise, the Bradford Pear trees shall be cut and the stump killed to prevent regrowth. 2. Throughout the proposed development, the Tree Board recommends that any existing or developed slopes of greater than 10% be planted with appropriate native vegetation (trees, shrubs, and perennial herbaceous plants to stabilize the slopes. No turf grasses can be used. A landscape architect (with wildlife habitat management expertise) will provide and implement a vegetative planting and management plan for this proposed development condition. The Tree Board requests the opportunity to review this plan. 3. The Tree Board also recommends that a landscape architect (with wildlife habitat management expertise) provide and implement a native vegetative planting and management plan for the common open space shown on the site plans with special emphasis on the stream corridor along Clear Creek and maintaining the rest of the area in early successional wildlife habitat. It appears that wetlands could be developed in this area. The area could certainly be utilized by residents through the use of walking trails and greenways. The Tree Board requests the opportunity to review this plan. 4. All preserved trees must be protected from construction activities as prescribed in the zoning code Section 15-4 regardless of use as tree credits. The Tree Board’s recommendations, above, are based on the following guiding city code documents: TREE BOARD - REGULAR MEETING – September 20, 2022 Page | 3  Municipal Code, Chapter 46, Article IV, Division 1,Trees & Shrubs, Section 46, 116 & 117; the Zoning Code, Article XV Buffering, Screening & Landscaping Sections 15-1, A &C and 15-4 A; the Subdivision Ordinance, Purpose and Intent, Section1.04, Part H; and the Comprehensive Plan, Vision Statement and Section 3.3, Goal NR-2, Strategy 2.3) and the City Council’s adoption (Feb., 2021) of core values and beliefs as guiding principles as they apply to the prioritization of existing tree canopy.
