Seventh Avenue. Garden - Fruit Trees and edible plants Board supports adding fruit trees to the Seventh Ave Garden D. Garden Jubilee - Proposed Banned Plant List In an effort to reduce invasive species in our surrounding area Bee City USA’s local leadership team. Asheville Botanical Society’s Banned Plant List for their Annual Plant Sale was brought to the board to be used as a guiding document for Garden Jubilee Vendors. This document would ban selling invasive species on City Property. It was voted upon b the Tree Board and adopted as a concept. The document was sent to the Downtown Office wear it was denied for TREE BOARD - REGULAR MEETING – May 16, 2023 Page | 1  the current year. They would like for it to be brought up after this years Jubilee as they do not have time to answer questions from vendors 10 days before the event. They said they would bring it up in the after-action review. They also inquired if the action is legal if there is no city ordinance supporting this action. They also noted that Garden Jubilee is not a City run event and raised the question if we could limit what vendors sell. CITY OF HENDERSONVILLE The City of Four Seasons PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Mark Stierwalt, Superintendent In an effort to combat invasive species in Hendersonville and surrounding areas, the Tree Board voted to support this effort to eliminate invasive species sales at our public events on City property. Starting in 2024 Garden Jubilee shouldl not allow the following plants to be sold at the festival. Most of these are well-known invasive species. We know most responsible growers would not sell most of these varieties. We would prefer that vendors not sell them this year if possible. We understand that if you grew some of these specifically for Garden Jubilee, we will allow them this year. Please refrain from selling anything on this list next year or risk losing your booth space. This list was compiled by the Asheville Botanical Society and agreed upon by the Hendersonville Tree Board and the local Leadership Team of Bee City USA. OLD BUSINESS A. Changes to City Ordinances/Zoning Concerning Trees – Glenn Lange Mr. Lange requested several documents be provided to the members of the committee. B. Canopy Study Grant In process and waiting to hear back from the company as to the start date. C. Pollinator Bed Traffic Island Four Seasons Boulevard Plants should start to go in this week. D. NeighborWoods & Other Tree Planting Projects for 2023 E. Bee City Update The Public Works Department has requested that the local affiliate shift from purely an educational endeavor to focusing on the new and existing pollinator beds and meadows on city owned property. This will be more of a “boots on the ground” approach focusing on providing better habitat and food sources for pollinators. The city will also provide a staff member to help manage the program. Thus, they city will no longer need for Bullington Gardens to manage the program. The City is extremely grateful for Bullington Gardens management of the program and commends them for executing a fantastic pollinator program. We also would like to thank Patrice German, the program coordinator, for pouring her heart and soul into the program and providing wonderful educational experiences for young an old alike. 6. OTHER BUSINESS A. Staff Comments 1. There is a possible working relationship with Blue Ridge Community College’s Horticulture Program that is being vetted. 2. The Parks department will be hosting 6 new positions in the upcoming year. 2 will be designated for downtown and Seventh Ave Districts. 3. Construction of the new Disc Golf Course will be starting soon and a selective harvest approach will be utilized and corridors will need created for the holes. B. 2023/2024 Tree Board Budget 7.
