Absent: Charles Travis Others Present: Jake Moore, Jeff and Lauren Hulsey, Michael Rowan, Mr., and Mrs. Ehmling. Called to Order at 6:30pm Motion to accept the Agenda Motion: Mike Forester Second: Colin Zimmerman Vote: Passed unanimously Invocation Given by Mark Burgdorf Motion to Approve the April 16, 2024, Deer Monitoring Committee Meeting Minutes Motion: Mark Burgdorf Second: Mike Forester Vote: Passed unanimously Chairs Comments: The meeting with TWRA leadership in their office revealed that they felt our dear population was too large. They committed to assisting us. Other take-aways: A. Chronic wasting disease is devastating to large herds since it spreads so quickly. B. TWRA and USDA have assigned people to assist the committee. C. People can contact USDA to report damage and problems with animals. D. Statistics are critical to assessing solutions and results, there are no gathering points for collection of data on der property damage, erratic behavior, accidents, attacks, and we need to find a way to collect it. E. Need an ongoing deer count, drone count is better than visual count. F. Continue the TWRA match of hunters with property Owners will continue. The Wounded Warrior hunt will continue. G. Abundant feed and lack of Predators is the problem not the lack of land. H. TWRA will hold a series of deer damage workshops. Board Liaison Comments: Mark commented that Casey was still waiting for TWRA contact to coordinate on the brochure to finalize for printing. We need to finalize the web site before mailing it in June 2024. 2 Public Comments: No Public Comments Old Business: Discussion on promoting deer resistant plants and fencing was held with no solid actions developed. The Chair reported that USDA would conduct a Deer Information workshop on June 29th at City Hall. New Business: The Chair asked how we can gather the cost of deer collisions since many are not reported to the police. Slyvia had a suggestion and will attempt to get cost information from them. Flockencier suggested that Information might be available from accident reports made to The State and will pursue that avenue. Although depredation kills and Owner/Hunter match kills are not currently collected their impact on herd size is unknown. The chair noted that with the herd size of 542reported for Indian Lake Peninsula a 30 % reduction would be over 150 deer. Mark reported that city animals like deer have elevated levels of stress induced chemicals due to noise, movement, and activity around them. Jake Moore requested USDA information.
