Minutes TREE BOARD Regular meeting 9 a.m. April 17, 2024 Board Meeting Room of Town Hall Annex, 105 E. Corbin St. Present: Chair Linda Paynter, Mixon Nelson, Thomas Darling and Jon Simpson Absent: Vice Chair Bridget Booher, Sharon Billings and Greg Yavelak Staff: Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood 1. Call to order, roll call and confirmation of quorum Chair Linda Paynter called the meeting to order at 9 a.m. Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood called the roll and confirmed the presence of a quorum. 2. Agenda changes and approval There were no changes. The agenda stood as presented. Motion: Jon Simpson moved to approve the agenda as it stood. Thomas Darling seconded. Vote: 4-0. 3. Minutes review and approval Minutes from regular meeting on March 20, 2024 Motion: Chair Linda Paynter moved approval of the March 20, 2024, minutes as submitted. Simpson seconded. Vote: 4-0 4. Discussion items A. Earth Evening planning Darling gave an update on planning for the event. The board discussed successful elements for the table. B. National Pollinator Week June 17-24, 2024 Trueblood conveyed information from the Garden Club representative, Sarah Meadows. The Garden Club organized events, and the Town of Hillsborough will cross promote them. The Tree Board can add events as desired. The board discussed hosting an invasive species removal event at the easement near the Gold Park Pollinator Garden. Darling suggested a site visit by board members first. C. Discuss Treasure Tree selection for 2024 Darling volunteered to prepare information for the Cottonwood tree located near Gold Park. 5. Updates A. Garden Club 101 E. B. Invasive Removal Team Tim Logue and Brian Mayell reported of Japanese knotweed infestations at multiple locations near the Eno River. They will be meeting with North Carolina representatives and homeowners to develop a control plan for the knotweed. Paynter suggested adding knotweed to the May agenda. Mayell also reported on an ongoing discussion with Dave Owens regarding the plant species planted along the Eno River by the Invasive Species Removal team. C. Prohibited/Recommended Plant Lists Subcommittee The list is underway according to Paynter. Trueblood suggested removing the current list from the town website to avoid confusion. D. Education/Outreach Materials Subcommittee Mixon Nelson reported the materials are near completion. E. Staff Trueblood reported: • The Climate Challenge continues through April 22, 2024. • The Fairview Community Watch has upcoming workdays. 6.
