Kendallville Park and Recreation Department 211 Iddings StreetKendallville, Indiana 46755 Phone (260)347-1064 KENDALLVILLE PARK AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT BOARD MEETING MINUTES March 9, 2020 7:30pm Present: Kevin Jansen, President; Dennis Nartker, Vice President; Dave Button; Tom Jansen; Kara Hand; Dawn McGahen, Recreation Director; Brett Slone, KORC Manager and Jim Pankop, Park Director. Also present: Steve Walters, Campground Coordinator and his wife Ruth. Public Comments: None were presented. Minutes of the meeting of February 10, 2020 were approved as presented. (T. Jansen/Nartker) Claims were reviewed and approved as presented. (Button/Hand) The Board voted unanimously to hire Steve Walters to be the Bixler Lake Campground Coordinator for the year 2020. Steve agreed and signed the contract for the 2020 season. (T. Jansen/Hand) The Board and staff continued the conversation with Steve and Ruth Walters discussing conceptual drawings on future improvements to the Campground. Directors Report: Highlights 1. Reviewed the Appropriation Report from the Clerk Treasurer for the month of February 2020. 2. Community Foundation of Noble County, Endowment Reports were reviewed. 3. Reported that AEP has finished cutting trees in the Park. 4. The Board learned that staff had a meeting with Ryan Ferguson representing, Activate Noble County. The meeting was to discuss possible exercise stations along the walkways in the park. After discussion the Board took no action, requesting more information. 5. The Board approved spending over $500.00 including: (T. Jansen/Button) • Pulver Asphalt Paving $67,980.00 Tennis Court Paving • Back 40 Fencing $9,776.00 Tennis Court Fencing. • Youth Center security system components. $3000.00 • Engineered Wood Fiber for playgrounds. $1,570.00 Maintenance Report: Highlights 1. Started to install a security system at the Youth Center with advice from Rick Kiersey the Cities IS Coordinator. 2. Helped the Street Department with snow removal several times. 3. Refurbished the Bixler Lake Park sign from Park Avenue. 4. Rebuilt Park Bench that was replaced with a new one at the Cole Flower Garden. 5. Street Department completed some brush mowing along several places in the park. 6. Cut down and cleaned up several small dead trees along with cleaning up what AEP left. Kendallville Park and Recreation Department 211 Iddings StreetKendallville, Indiana 46755 Phone (260)347-1064 Kendallville Outdoor Recreation Complex Update: Brett reported that April 15th is the first scheduled games at the KORC, weather permitting. Brett also reported that he has spent time putting together costs and time schedules for future maintenance and upkeep of the facility. These include but are not limited to, sealing and striping of the parking lot, replacing backstop netting, painting of the buildings and dugouts, new roofs on the buildings and dugouts and equipment replacement. Recreation Update: 1. Keeping busy hiring summer staff, planning field trips and organizing activities. 2. We are hosting two back to camp nights for parents to register their children, ask questions, etc. One will be Monday March 16th at the YMCA and the other one Wednesday April 15 th at the Youth Center. 3. There was vandalism in the west park to the musical instruments and a park bench. Due to the last few summers and the activity around the Rotary pavilion, summer daycamp will be reserving it during camp hours. 5-Year Master Plan Update: Conversation on the progress to the Tennis Court upgrades and status of the Campground improvements were discussed earlier in the Board meeting. Acceptance of Donations: (Hand/Button) ❖ Tennis Court Upgrade o Dekko Foundation - $37,500.00 o Thomas & Rita Koerner - $250.00 o Atz Law Office, LLC - $250.00 o Jack & Cynthia Jollief - $100.00 o Thomas Leedy & Kerri Axel - $100.00 o Christopher & Tricia Denton - $75.00 ❖ KORC (Mike Probst Memorial) o Linda Young - $50.00 ❖ Recreation o 3 Rivers FCU - $750.00 Board Input: Dennis Nartker ask Brett how sign-ups are going for youth baseball. Brett informed Dennis that he will find out soon as he will be attending their next Board Meeting. Kevin Jansen reported that the play equipment structure in the Picnic Area has a broken piece. A motion to adjourn was made by Tom Jansen at 7:47pm.
