KENDALLVILLE PARK AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT
BOARD MEETING MINUTES
November 9, 2020
6:30pm
Present: Kevin Jansen, President; Tom Jansen; Dennis Nartker; Sam Zollman; Jim Pankop, Park Director and
Dawn McGahen, Recreation Director. Steve Walters, Campground Coordinator and his wife Ruth were present.
Also present Ron Witham and Diane Peachy, Skatepark Advocates.
Sam Zollman was welcomed as a new Park Board member coming from the Library Board.
Public Comments: None were given.
Minutes of the meeting of October 12, 2020 were approved as presented. (T. Jansen/Nartker)
Claims were reviewed and approved as presented. (Nartker/T. Jansen)
Steve Walters, Campground Coordinator, addressed the Board concerning safety issues at the Campground.
Steve explained several suggestions he felt would improve the situation. After discussion the Board tabled
taking any action at this time.
Diane Peachy and Ron Witham addressed the Park Board on behalf of the skatepark enthusiast. The goal at this
meeting was to take several proposed locations, approved by the Park Board, back to their group for further
discussion. The Board picked 5 locations for them to consider.
Directors Report: Highlights
1. Reported that Campground income was up $13,887.26 from 2019 totaling $60,320.68 for the 2020
season.
2. Discussed end of year spending on equipment, park improvement and other items.
3. Current project updates were given.
Maintenance Report: Highlights
1. The road and parking area was improved at the new KORC soccer field with asphalt millings donated
by Pulver Asphalt Paving.
2. Maintenance staff continues to mulch leaves throughout the park.
3. Completed water shut offs and winterization.
4. Picnic tables inspection was completed and 35 were brought in for repair.
Kendallville Outdoor Recreation Complex Update: Reported that painting of the 2 older concession buildings
has been completed.

Recreation Update:
1. The Light the Night Virtual Backpack Auction ended and approximately $1,100 will be donated to the
organization. Special thanks to all the individuals and businesses that donated.
2. This last trimester of school, we had a junior from East Noble High School doing an internship with us.
He did a little bit of everything and seemed to enjoy his time spent working with the department.
3. We are in the process of collecting plastic caps, so that we can purchase two Beth’s Benches for the
pickleball courts. Noble Trails graciously loaned us two benches with the understanding that we would
replace them in the spring.
4. The Community Christmas Greetings Drive-thru is underway and approximately 40 boards have been
handed out to various groups.
5. We are partnering again this year with the Cole Center Family YMCA and hosting our Tinsel Trot
Family Fun Walk/Run through the Christmas Greetings. It will be held Friday December 11 th, 2020.

Board Input: Sam Zollman asked who should be lowering the flag at the Veterans Memorial on appropriate
days. The Board thought that it should be City Hall.
Dennis Nartker made a motion to adjourn at 7:27 pm.
