Kendallville Park and Recreation Department 211 Iddings StreetKendallville, Indiana 46755 Phone (260)347-1064 BOARD MEETING MINUTES March 8, 2021 6:30pm Present: Kevin Jansen, President; Dennis Nartker; Jennifer Blackman; Sam Zollman; Dave Button; Jim Pankop, Park Director; Brett Slone, KORC Manager and Dawn McGahen, Recreation Director. Also present Mayor SuzAnne W. Handshoe, Patriotic Pops discussion. Diane Peachy, Ron Witham, Chris Streb and Cathy Berry Skatepark Advocates. Andy Barrand, The News Sun. Public Comments: None were given. Minutes of the meeting of February 8, 2021 were approved as presented. (Zollman / Blackman) Claims were reviewed and approved as presented. (Button / Zollman) Mayor Handshoe asked the Board if the Park and Recreation Department could take over the duties of organizing the activities on the 4th of July. This would include the Patriotic Pops, fireworks and all other associated organization needed. This is currently being done by Scott Derby the Engineering Administrator. After discussion, the Mayor was asked if Scott Derby could attend the next Board Meeting to give a full account of what he does. The decision was tabled. (Nartker / Button) Diane Peachy addressed the Board on behalf of the skatepark group. She informed the Board that soil borings done at Sunset Park near the pavilion came back good. The next step is to start the rezoning process. Diane asked the Board for 3 letters that would be needed in order for her to represent the Park Board at the rezoning meetings. The Mayor recommended a Town Hall Meeting be added to the process. The Board voted to approve the letters. (Blackman / Zollman) Directors Report: Highlights 1. Reviewed the Appropriation Report from the Clerk Treasurer. 2. Informed the Board that a meeting was held with Kristen Johnson and Mayor Handshoe to discuss a Bike Share program. The meeting went well with several more questions coming up that need to be answered before bringing the discussion to the Board. 3. Discussed progress on several projects including moving the ball fields on the north side of Sunset Park to the south side and returning a portion of the north side to prairie. Maintenance Report: Highlights 1. Helped Street Department with snow removal several times. 2. Painted back furnace room at Youth Center. 3. Replaced broken play panel on Picnic Area composite play structure. 4. Installed tennis nets. 5. Added material and grade stone roads and parking lots. Kendallville Park and Recreation Department 211 Iddings StreetKendallville, Indiana 46755 Phone (260)347-1064 Kendallville Outdoor Recreation Complex Update: Brett Slone reported that he has met with both the boys and girls youth recreational leagues and with the new representative for NASA soccer. They have discussed making whatever adjustments that are needed in order to have safe play for their respective leagues. Brett also reported that the Complex is scheduled to start play on April the 16 th and all weekends are booked thru August. Recreation Update: Dawn reported that Pickle Ball play have become so popular that the organizers request that the Tennis Court be relined to accommodate six Pickle Ball Courts. Jim Pankop said he will get a cost for the work. Acceptance of Donations: (Zollman / Blackman) ❖ General Use- o Kappa Kappa Kappa Inc. / Gamma Xi Chapter - $150.00 ❖ KORC - o Splash ‘n Dash Car Wash - $100.00 Board Input: Sam Zollman asked the Board if a Splash Pad was still being considered. Kevin Jansen commented that it will probably come up again after some of the project we have going are completed. Dennis Nartker informed everyone that the vultures are back. Dennis Nartker made a motion to adjourn at 7:37pm.
