MINUTES COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LA HABRA Wednesday, August 12, 2015 FINAL: These Minutes were approved at the September 9, 2015 Commission meeting. The Community Services Commission of the City of La Habra met at La Habra City Hall at 201 E. La Habra Boulevard, La Habra on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 6:30 PM. COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Badillo, Brown, Drake, Faith, Felix, and Musser COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Surich-excused OTHER OFFICIALS PRESENT: Director Sal Failla, Child Development Manager Catherine Villanueva PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Badillo PUBLIC COMMENTS There were none CONSENT CALENDAR MOVED by Commissioner Felix, seconded by Commissioner Badillo and CARRIED 4-0-2 (Drake and Musser) TO APPROVE THE COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION MINUTES OF JULY 8, 2015. CONSIDERATION ITEMS A. HEAD START Child Development Manager Villanueva reviewed the Monthly Report, financial reports, and reports that the Early Head Start program was in session at this time. She then presented the 2014-15 Period II Monitoring report from OCHS and discussed the findings. Then the Corrective Action Plan for the monitoring was discussed and the Commission presented some suggestions on improvements. The Commission then took the following actions; MOVED by Commissioner Drake, seconded by Commissioner Musser, and CARRIED 6-0, TO APPROVE JULY 2015 MONTHLY REPORT. MOVED by Commissioner Musser, seconded by Commissioner Brown, and CARRIED 6-0, TO APPROVE THE 2014-15 PERIOD II CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN. Agenda Item No. III.2.a Meeting Date: 11/16/15  B. YOUTH COMMITTEE 22 members of the Youth Committee participated in the Corn Festival parade with the Commission. The Commission also discussed the upcoming year with and suggested several actions to enhance the experience for the Committee members. Commission representatives and Staff will be implementing the suggestions with the Youth Committee during the year. C. SPECIAL EVENTS The Commission evaluated the Summer Concerts, 4th of July Spectacular, and the Special Olympics programs. The events were all presented very well and those attending were able to enjoy their time. There were a few suggestions for improvements for the 2016 Summer Concerts; • Review the quality of the sound contractor. There appeared more problems with the quality of the sound for all the concerts. This may have been due to the new staff working our concerts, but staff will meet and discuss the concerns with the contractor. • Incorporate more pre-concert shows if possible. Audition bands that may be interested in performing and schedule them with similar types of music for the main show. Try and use local high school or youth bands if possible, including Washington Middle School’s Mariachi group. The Commission complimented the Community Services Department staff for their hard work in making the Summer programs successful. ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS – Director Sal Failla • Invited the Commission to attend the end of summer ice cream day on Thursday, August 13th. • Reviewed the correspondence in the Commissioner’s packets. DISCUSSION ANY COMMISSIONER MAY WISH TO PRESENT Commissioner Musser suggested the Commission consider visiting the non-profit organizations to learn about their operations and challenges. Staff will contact the non-profits and schedule future meetings with them On a motion by Commissioner Felix, seconded by Commissioner Brown, the Commission unanimously adjourned the meeting at 7:23 P.M. to Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 6:30 PM.
