LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting May 28, 2019 1. A regular meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Mayor Don Kendrick at 6:30 p.m. 2. Executive Board Members present: Executive Board Don Kendrick, Mayor Robin Carder, Council Member Matthew Lyons, BUSD Carolyn Cockrell, BUSD Ernie Dorado, Resident Mark Rodgers, BUSD Patti Latourelle, Resident Denise Fisher, Resident Jason Lorge, Resident Morgan Kostolefsky, Resident Hollie Savage, LVPD Francisco Cambero, LVPD David Yim, Tri-City Isela Moreno, Tri-City Bill Aguirre, City of La Verne JR Ranells, City of La Verne 3. Review of Minutes Minutes for the April meeting were approved. 4. School Resource Officer School Resource Officer (SRO) Frankie Cambero noted that the school year was wrapping up with good byes and some anxious students. The group discussed opportunities and strategies to mitigate continued concerns surrounding vaping. There was also discussion involving mental health issues. It was suggested that a subcommittee involving the Police Department and BUSD representatives be created in order to discuss best avenues to educate students of these concerns toward the beginning of the school year. 5. Leadership Program Bill Aguirre with the City of La Verne presented the idea of establishing a $250 scholarship for youth that give back to YFAC as participants. Mayor Kendrick had originally requested this be established. The group approved the concept and voted to award Vanessa Hess the first scholarship. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes May 28, 2019, page 2 6. Mentor Program Carolyn Cockrell with the BUSD and the coordinator of the Mentor Program provided a recap of the spring semester’s program. Carolyn noted that they had great participants this semester and that positive connections had been made. 7. Community Navigator Community Navigator Isela Moreno reported on the regular availability of navigators in La Verne. Isela also noted that navigators had been assisting local homeless persons with services and has been partnering with the Police Department through the HOST program regularly. 8. Video Updates JR Ranells with the City of La Verne shared the Summer Lunch video that had been created and put out on social media earlier in the month. JR also reported that the video on Mental Health was underway and would be posted prior to the August meeting. Patti Latourelle noted that the statistical results of the videos should be shared with the group. 9. Round Table SRO Cambero thanked the group for their part in the successful POA Golf Tournament whose proceeds will be going toward YFAC programs. The final numbers are being counted and will be shared with the group at the next meeting. Mark Rodgers with the BUSD shared information on a Parent Academy taking place in October at Lone Hill Elementary. The BUSD is expecting 100-150 participants. Denise Fisher provided information on the efforts of the newly created committee to support a La Verne K9 and associated vehicle. 10.
