LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting October 22,2019 1. A regular meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Mayor Don Kendrick at 6:30 p.m. 2. Executive Board Members present Executive Board Don Kendrick, Chair Robin Carder, Council Member Matthew Lyons, BUSD Carolyn Cockrell, BUSD Denise Fisher, Resident Mark Rodgers, BUSD Eric Podley, BUSD Jason Lorge, Resident Ron Serven, Resident Vanessa Hess, Resident Patty Hess, Resident Doug Strange, Resident Krista Chakmak, Resident Lacy Flippin, FairPlex Sam Gonzalez, LVPD Hollie Savage, LVPD Francisco Cambero, LVPD David Yim, Tri-City JR Ranells, City of La Verne 3. Review of Minutes Minutes for the September 24th meeting were approved. 4. POA Presentation La Verne Police Officers' Association (POA) President Mark Gutierrez provided the group an update on the POA's first golf tournament noting that it was very successful. The POA had reviewed several potential options to donate the proceeds of the golf tournament to and selected YFAC because of its community contributions. Mark presented a check to Mayor Kendrick for $4,000 to be used for YFAC programs. 5. Tax Measure lnfo Mayor Kendrick introduced City Manager Bob Russi to the group. Bob provided a presentation on the proposed tax measure that would be placed on the March 2020 ballot for resident consideration. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes October 22,2019, page2 Members of the group asked questions and provided prospective on the proposed measure. 6. School Resource Officer School Resource Officer (SRO) Frankie Cambero provided information on the recent potential threats against Bonita High School. Frankie noted that the Bonita Unified School District handled the situation exceptionally well. Frankie also reported that vaping continues to be a problem amongst the community's youth and that it is not just affecting the "usual suspects." Even kids that would traditionally be considered immune from getting into trouble have been involved with vaping. The group discussed efforts by Congress and the state legislature to restrict vaping products and what additional efforts could be taken. Jessica Vozella with the American Lung Association will be providing a presentation at an upcoming YFAC meeting. 7. BUSD Report Mark Rodgers with the BUSD provided a report on activities within the district. Mark noted recent K-9 visits to schools as well as personnel training on detection of students under the influence. Mark also updated the group regarding the additional mental health resources on school campuses. 8. Public Safety Open House Community Services Officer Hollie Savage provided the group information on the upcoming Public Safety Open House. Hollie also presented the group with information on proposed safety signs to be distributed at the City's booth on behalf of YFAC during the open house. The board approved purchasing the signs for $425. 9. Teen Summit Bill Aguirre with the City of La Verne provided an overview of the upcoming Teen Summit. Bill also invited YFAC members to stop by the event if they were interested. 10. Regular Tips JR Ranells with the City of La Verne provided information on potential priorities for the group to consider regarding doing regular tips to the community that would be put on various social media platforms The group directed staff to focus on regular tips rather than regular videos produced by Proud Digital Media and that internal staff be the ones creating the content. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes October 22, 2019, page 3 1'1 . Round Table Jessica Vozella shared information on recent studies on vaping and its harmful effects as well as information on how to get help. BUSD Board Member Matt Lyons thanked the Police Department as a parent and board member for their response to the recent threat. Matt also mentioned the Grace Miller Fall Festival and the Police Department's Pink Patch Project. Lacy Flippin with Fairplex shared information on resources and offerings from her organization. Vanessa Hess inquired about the new high school representative. Mr. Podley noted they are working on getting the new person on board and expect it to be done soon. Ron Serven thanked the City for the presentation on the tax measure and noted he is looking forward to working with partners on solving problems in the comm unity. Jason Lorge shared his appreciation for YFAC supporting the safety sign distribution at the Public Safety Open House. JR noted his son's gratitude and excitement after visiting Heritage Park's Pumpkin Patch and how lucky our youth are to be in La Verne. Council Member Robin Carder thanked the group for their participation and discussion. Robin also introduced Doug Strange and noted his connection to the Active Transportation Committee. Patty Hess shared information on Claremont's efforts to initiate a teen group on suicide loss as well as other information related to suicide prevention. 12. Public Comment Michael Gaydos noted the recent losses suffered at Bonita High School has been difficult but has brought people together. '1 3. Next Meeting The next YFAC meeting is scheduled for November 26,2019 at 6:30 P.m. 14.
