LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting January 28, 2020 1. A regular meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Mayor Don Kendrick at 6:30 p.m. 2. Review of Minutes Minutes for the November 26th meeting were approved. 4. School Resource Officer School Resource Officer (SRO) Frankie Cambero provided information on a possible tool to help address the ongoing use of vaping products by community youth. This relates to a citation process that is not currently being used. The group discussed educational options for first time offenders and progressing to stronger measures for additional infractions. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes January 28, 2020, page 2 5. BUSD Report Mark Rodgers with the BUSD provided a report on activities within the district. Mark provided information on a new pilot program for students caught with controlled substances. Mark also shared information on recent K-9 visits to schools and a successful grant application that will support career technical education. 6. School Counseling Program David Yim with Tri-City Mental Health Services reported information from December referrals to the school counseling program. David also shared how Ekstrand Elementary was processing mental health services in a different way that might be something to model in other BUSD schools. 7. American Lung Association Jessica Vozella and Isabella Alva with the American Lung Association provided a thorough presentation on addressing the youth vaping epidemic. Isabella is also a student at Bonita High School and provided her perspective of vaping issues. The group discussed strengthening the City’s retail tobacco license. Staff will work with Jessica on suggested amendments and bring back for further discussion and direction. Isabella is working on her senior project related to vaping issues and will come back to present the project at the April 28th YFAC meeting. 8. Round Table Hollie Savage with the La Verne Police Department thanked the group for supporting the Public Safety Open House. Hollie noted that the department was still receiving inquiries into the “Drive Like You Live Here” signs. SRO Cambero shared information on technology advancements and equipment available to officers. SRO Cambero noted Lt. Gonzalez and his particular efforts in obtaining resources. Lt. Gonzalez noted efforts to stem tobacco and vape products to underage users and also shared an update on recruitment efforts for the next SRO. Krista Weismair Henrik with Ramona Middle School discussed the importance of taking the stigma out of mental health and anxiety. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes January 28, 2020, page 3 Joe Otto with the Oak Mesa PTA shared his background and his interest in being involved with the committee. BUSD School Board Member Matt Lyons shared that the State of the District will be presented on February 25th at 11 a.m. Mr. Lyons also noted that the BUSD has broadened programs and focused on intervention for those less served. He also shared the district’s best days are ahead. Michael Miller with David & Margaret expressed his appreciation for La Verne’s ability to build effective relationships. Marissa Scholefield with David & Margaret shared information on programs and resources available as well as a new drop in center. David Yim with Tri-City Mental Health Services discussed the importance of building trust in order to provide better service and better support our youth. Isela Moreno with Tri-City Mental Health Services provided information on the upcoming stakeholders meeting, programs available through Tri-City’s, an upcoming hiring event at the Wellness Center and a grant available for groups interested in early intervention and wellbeing. Resident Ron Serven wanted the group to remember today’s date related to a wellness initiative in the early stages. Ron mentioned working with the La Verne/San Dimas Education Foundation on important programs to benefit the community. Denise Fisher provided an update on the K9 Foundation and an upcoming fundraiser banquet that is in the early planning stages. Mark with the La Verne Bicycle Coalition promoted the benefits of Safe Routes to Schools and discussed with the group the importance and potential of partnerships that could be utilized for grant funding. JR Ranells with the City of La Verne updated the group on the new YFAC accounts through facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes January 28, 2020, page 4 Council Member Robin Carder thanked the group for their participation and shared information on the upcoming Health and Fitness Fair as well as the Community Yard Sale on April 18th at BHS. Bill Aguirre with the City shared information about the Open Streets event taking place April 19th. 9. Public Comment None 10.
