LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting February 25, 2020 1. A regular meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Mayor Don Kendrick at 6:30 p.m. 2. Executive Board Members present: Executive Board Don Kendrick, Chair Robin Carder, Council Member Matthew Lyons, BUSD Carolyn Cockrell, BUSD Denise Fisher, Resident Mark Rodgers, BUSD Michael Gaydos, Student Representative Jason Lorge, Resident Ron Serven, Resident Mark Fulgenzi, LV Bike Coalition Jessica Vozella, American Lung Association Dexter Sapien, American Lung Association Marissa Scholefield, David & Margaret Michael Miller, David & Margaret Sam Gonzalez, LVPD Hollie Savage, LVPD David Yim, Tri-City Isela Moreno, Tri-City Bill Aguirre, City of La Verne JR Ranells, City of La Verne 3. Review of Minutes Minutes for the January 28th meeting were approved. 4. School Resource Officer Administrative Lieutenant Sam Gonzalez reported that the new School Resource Officer (SRO) would be Janessa Gonzalez and that she would begin transitioning with outgoing SRO Frankie Cambero toward the end of the year. The group discussed youth and mental health issues in the community as well as available resources for helping. 5. Budget Update Bill Aguirre with the City of La Verne shared a report on YFAC’s current funding status. Bill noted that it may be time to begin considering a fundraiser to generate revenue for programs. Bill shared it had been several years since the last effort because of generous donations from community sources. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes February 25, 2020, page 2 6. Teen Center Bill provided a history on efforts to build a Teen Center in La Verne as well as an update on today’s status. Bill shared he hopes to work on securing grant funding for a large portion of the costs to build the center and that funding would be crucial for the project to become a realization. 7. Parent Tips JR Ranells with the City of La Verne provided information on the YFAC social media platforms. The group discussed generating regular posts each week on parenting tips including posts on healthy living, general wellness, as well as focusing on suicide prevention. Other ideas included a YFAC meeting re- cap, vaping issues, and education on appropriate/inappropriate social media usage. 8. Round Table Mark Fulgenzi with the LV Bicycle Coalition shared that their upcoming meeting will be held on March 18th. Mark also shared information on Open Streets on April 19th and Ride to Work Day on May 14th. Lt. Gonzalez shared input on checking in with children regarding mental health. Matt Lyons with the BUSD shared information on the State of the District. He noted he is a happy parent and BUSD Board Member and complimented the professionalism of the La Verne Police Department. Isela Moreno with Tri-City Mental Health shared information on the Homeless Navigator. She also shared information on the upcoming Green Ribbon Week taking place the week of March 16th. Marissa Scholefield with David & Margaret shared information on programs and resources available as well as a new drop in center. Resident Ron Serven encouraged the group to broaden their awareness and wellness. Mayor Kendrick shared his appreciation for everyone’s participation and that he hopes the group will continue to work to make La Verne the best it can be. 9.
