LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting June 22, 2021 1. A regular meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Don Kendrick at 6:30 p.m. 2. Executive Board Members present (virtually): Executive Board Robin Carder, Chair – Council Member Rick Crosby, Vice Chair – Council Member Krista Chakman, BUSD Board Member Denise Fisher, Resident Don Kendrick, Resident Donna Redman, Resident Jason Lorge, Resident Mark Rodgers, BUSD Sam Gonzalez, LVPD Janessa Gonzalez, LVPD Chad Peterson, City of La Verne Jessica Vozella, American Lung Assoc. Jason Lorge, Resident JR Ranells, City of La Verne 3. Review of Minutes Minutes for the March 23, 2021, meeting were approved. 4. Teen Center Design Community Services Supervisor Chad Peterson provided an overview of the various design phases of the proposed Teen Center. The different designs represent changes after receiving feedback from the community. Chad also updated the group on the status of the grant application to support construction. 5. City Youth Programs Chad handled this item as well and updated the group for what activities have been available noting that a majority of the regular programs weren’t able to go forward the last several months. However, with the relaxation of the County Health Guidelines, more programs are coming on line especially as it relates to outside program. Chad noted that some of the program sign-ups are a little lower but others are attracting many participants. Chad also shared information regarding the upcoming 4th of July festivities in town. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes June 22, 2021, page 2 6. School Resource Officer School Resource Officer Janessa Gonzalez provided a report to the group. Janessa noted that students back on campus was welcome and that they were well behaved. Janessa also shared information about the various successful graduations and anticipation of getting ready for a more normal school year next year. Lieutenant Gonzalez also explained Janessa’s role during the summer and the excellent job she is doing for the City. 7. BUSD Report Mark Rodgers with the Bonita Unified School District shared input on the challenges associated with high school sports and overcoming those with constant changes to guidelines. Mark shared perspective of how restrictive things were in the beginning and then how they progressed to near normal activities. Mark noted that there were many successful accomplishments throughout the challenging journey. Vice Chair Crosby thanked the BUSD and staff’s effort to provide a sense of normalcy back to the community. BUSD Chair Chakmak provided information about summer school and shared information about recognizing first responders who had recently saved the life of a high school coach. Lastly the group discussed the potential masking requirements for the next school year. 8. Tobacco Ordinance JR Ranells with the City provided a history of YFAC’s direction for the Police Department to work with Jessica Vozella and the American Lung Association to draft a Tobacco Ordinance banning all flavored tobacco products. There will be an exception in regard to menthol products related to legal challenges. The group discussed the specifics and what is included. It is anticipated that the draft ordinance will go before the City Council for consideration at the July 19th meeting. Jessica noted that she was very excited La Verne is taking this significant step forward. Jessica also noted that menthol remains a significant public health issue and encouraged the group to be diligent in protecting the community. Sam shared that the City is keeping menthol’s on its radar in anticipation that the ordinance Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes June 22, 2021, page 3 can eventually be amended once there is less of a legal concern. 9. Public Comment Jason Lorge thanked everyone for their work on behalf of the community. Robin requested the group to share any potential agenda items for future consideration. Krista inquired and shared a desire for the next meeting to be in person. It wasn’t yet known if the next meeting would be in person. 10. Next Meeting The next YFAC meeting is scheduled for July 27th at 6:30 p.m. 11. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m. Respectfully submitted, JR Ranells Assistant to the City Manager
