LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting February 15, 2022 1. A meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Chair Robin Carder at 6:30 p.m. 2. Executive Board Members present: Executive Board Robin Carder, Chair – Council Member Rick Crosby, Vice Chair – Council Member Greg Palatto - BUSD Denise Fisher – Resident Don Kendrick - Resident Chris Dransfeldt, LVPD Hollie Savage, LVPD Janessa Gonzalez, LVPD Joy Lindsay, BUSD Edward McMillon, BUSD Grant Dineley, BUSD JR Ranells, City of La Verne Alfie Sanchez, Majestic Cycling/Kiwanis International Ron Serven, Resident Charleen Mejia, Resident 3. Intro. Of New Executive Dir. Chair Robin Carder introduced Don Kendrick as the newest Executive Board Member. Mr. Kendrick shared a few thoughts on YFAC and his associated passion for the group noting his considerable experience participating over numerous years in many capacities. 4. Review of Minutes Minutes for the November 16, 2021, meeting were approved with an amendment correcting a numbering error. 5. School Resource Officer SRO Janessa Gonzalez provided information with students transitioning through impacts of COVID. Janessa also shared information on the recent mask protests as well as on recent enforcement efforts related to flavored tobacco products. The group discussed menthol and staff was directed to clarify its enforcement or not. 6. BUSD Update Report was postponed to the next meeting. BHS Update Bonita High School Vice-Principal Edward McMillon shared information on continuing efforts regarding vaping and addressing impacts from COVID on students. Edward also shared information about activities that have and will be taking place at the school and highlighted the success of girls soccer and girls water polo. 8. Billie Eilish Article Chair Robin Carder discussed a recent article that was attached to the agenda regarding artist Billie Eilish and her exposure to pornography and its associated impacts. The group engaged in a significant conversation discussing issues with exposure to social media and other areas that can be harmful to youth. Charlene Mejia noted the potential to work with PTA groups in order to get helpful information to families. Ron Serven noted the possibility to engage school service clubs and leadership groups as a path to educate students effectively. Staff was directed to take the lead on exploring these and other effective opportunities over the next several months and bringing back possible programs for the next school year. 9. Community Well Being Grant JR Ranells with the City of La Verne presented information regarding the Community Well Being Grant offered by Tri-City Mental Health. Staff will work with YFAC participants to generate possible ideas for a YFAC specific application and bring back for direction at the March meeting. 10. Public Comment Chair Carder mentioned issues related to bullying, Ron Serven noted relationship with the La Verne/San Dimas Education Foundation and areas of their efforts, and Don Kendrick shared a desire related to youth representation from Ramona Middle School. 11. Next Meeting The next YFAC meeting was scheduled for March 22, 2022. 12. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, JR Ranells Assistant to the City Manager
