LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting March 22, 2022 1. A meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Chair Robin Carder at 6:31 p.m. 2. Executive Board Members present: Executive Board Rick Crosby, Vice Chair - Council Member Denise Fisher - Resident Don Kendrick - Resident Hollie Savage, LVPD Josh Wells, LVPD Janessa Gonzalez, LVPD Ryan Lehotsky, LVPD Mark Rodgers, BUSD Joy Lindsay, BUSD JR Ranells, City of La Verne Ron Serven, Resident 3. Review of Minutes Minutes for the February 15, 2022, meeting were approved. 4. School Resource Officer SRO Janessa Gonzalez provided a report noting that things have been busy and that there continues to be mental health related issues. The group discussed the additional resources available as well as more awareness surrounding mental health. Ryan Lehotsky was introduced as the City’s new Tobacco Education Compliance Officer (TECO). Ryan shared his background and plan for upcoming education and compliance activities surrounding the Tobacco Ordinance and funding through a Department of Justice grant. 5. BUSD Update Mark Rodgers with the BUSD shared positive news regarding lower COVID-19 cases and the ability to focus on kids. Mark noted that the BUSD was preparing to have summer programs for all three levels of education as a mitigation measure related to COVID impacts. Mark also shared plans for transitional kindergarten as well as the impacts on new state day care programs. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes March 22, 2022, page 2 6. Community Well Being Grant JR Ranells with the City shared potential areas to target for YFAC’s grant application for community wellness efforts. The group supported focusing on expansion of the Summer Lunch Program as well as providing other educational/resource materials for residents regarding wellness. Resident Ron Serven shared information regarding the La Verne San Dimas Education Foundation related to wellness noting he would be providing a full presentation at the next meeting in April. 7. Public Comment Board Member Don Kendrick shared his desire to put an emphasis at the beginning of the next school year to gain youth representation on YFAC. Ron shared information on the Compassion in Action Walkathon taking place on April 16th. JR noted opportunities for interested residents or businesses to sponsor the City’s Concerts in the Park Series by contacting Community Services. 8.
