LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting September 26, 2023 1. A meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Chair Crosby at 6:30 p.m. Executive Board Members present: Executive Board Rick Crosby, YFAC Chair, Council Member Greg Palatto, BUSD Board Member Don Kendrick, Resident Denise Fisher, Resident 2. Review of Minutes Minutes for the August 22, 2023, meeting were reviewed and approved. 3. SRO Report School Resource Officer (SRO) Eddie Burgos reported that the school year is going well so far. He has been visiting La Verne schools and noted that he is beginning to get familiar with his role as the SRO. 4. BUSD Report Mark Rodgers shared the school year was off to a smooth start and that there has been an added focus on student attendance, academic performance, and social/emotional wellness. The group celebrated the announcement of Grace Miller Elementary being named a Blue Ribbon School, the upcoming Bonita High School Trade Fair, and the recent spotlight of Bonita High School on local television news. 5. Program Review Assistant City Manager JR Ranells shared that YFAC is funded completely through donations. The last fundraiser was approximately 5 years ago and the committee has continued to do programs, but has not increased funds or donations. JR reported that as a result of the opportunity presented through the Ruth & Joseph Reed foundation, staff had submitted information to the IRS in hopes of being able to accept funds. Executive Board Member Don Kendrick shared information about the foundation and how YFAC’s programs were in line with their goals. The group discussed several different program ideas that might benefit today’s youth. Direction was given for staff to work with BUSD and Chair Crosby to develop a program that reaches out directly to BUSD teachers Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes September 26, 2023, page 2 and staff for ideas that they think would help community youth. 6. Public Comment Executive Board Member Denise Fisher shared information regarding an upcoming K-9 Foundation Fundraiser on December 2nd. Carolyn (didn’t record last name) suggested resources for parents such as workshops and information that would be helpful in protecting kids. 7. Next Meeting The next YFAC meeting was scheduled for October 24, 2023. 8. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7:37 p.m. Respectfully submitted, JR Ranells YFAC Staff Liaison
