Minutes of the Regular Meeting
November 28, 2023
1. A meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Chair
Rick Crosby at 6:30 p.m.

2. Review of Minutes Minutes for the October 24, 2023, meeting were
approved.
3. SRO Report Student Resource Officer (SRO) Eduardo Burgos
discussed continuing patrols of schools during the
drop off time. He shared about the softball game
between Bonita High, the La Verne Fire
Department and the La Verne Police Department.
The recent achievement of YFAC member Nathan
Kwan for his perfect score on the AP Computer
Science test was reported and celebrated by the
group. SRO Burgos talked about the expansion of
the explorer program and how the program helps
build confidence, public speaking skills, and team
building for students.
4. BUSD Report Mark Rodgers from BUSD reported about the
success of the first semester of the school year
including strong enrollment and attendance. Mark
shared about the Career Tech Education Counselor
at the district and the work that they are doing to
hold specialized fairs for students interested in
skilled trades.
5. Tri-City Mental Health Sara Rodriguez from Tri-City Mental Health
Services (Tri-City MHS) presented to the group
about the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) and
how it affects Tri-City’s funding and programs. She
also shared a high-level overview of the services
and programs offered by Tri-City Mental Health to
the La Verne community. Ms. Rodriguez

encouraged the committee to participate in the
Community Planning Process survey that Tri-City
MHS is currently holding.
6. Program Development Assistant City Manager JR Ranells provided the
group with an update on the new grant program. The
committee discussed how to focus the grant, the
scope of the grant, and how much each individual
award should be. The committee voted to set aside
$10,000 of YFAC funds and approve “up to $2,000”
per award toward the program with all present
members voting yes.
7. Cancellation of Dec. Meeting The committee agreed to cancel the December 26,
2023 meeting.
8. Public Comment Mark Rodgers shared that he will be retiring from
BUSD at the end of the school year and will be
helping to find a new BUSD representative to attend
YFAC moving forward.
9. Next Meeting The next YFAC meeting was scheduled for January
23, 2024.
10. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7:39 p.m.
