LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting January 23, 2024 1. A meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Chair Rick Crosby at 6:32 p.m. Executive Board Members present: Executive Board Rick Crosby, YFAC Chair, Council Member Greg Palatto, BUSD Denise Fisher, Resident Don Kendrick, Resident 2. Review of Minutes Minutes for the November 28, 2023, meeting were approved. 3. SRO Report Student Resource Officer (SRO) Eduardo Burgos discussed safety precautions being taken by the district and the high school surrounding sports events and games and during the school day. The high school held a lockdown drill and it provided good information to the BHS administration, faculty, and staff about continued training and preparations that will help in case of an emergency situation. 4. BUSD Report Nikole Burgess from BUSD reported about the return from winter break. Students and faculty are back in full swing and the semester is starting off strong. They are holding some spring events including an Elective Rush and are preparing for the pre-registration phase of the school year. The state of the district will be held on February 8 at 10:15 and the Bonita High School Culinary students are catering the event as well as the Chamber Singers performing at the event. 5. Fund Transfer Assistant City Manager JR Ranells reported to the group that YFAC funds are now being held with the City of La Verne. 6. Program Development Assistant City Manager JR Ranells provided the group with an update on the new grant program. The grant is now live and the deadline to apply is March 21, 2024 and applications can be found at www.cityoflaverne.org/yfac- app. Don Kendrick brought an idea to the group about creating an opportunity for digital artists at the district to have their art be displayed on the signal control boxes. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes January 23, 2024, page 2 Assistant City Manager JR Ranells told the group that Public Works Director Meg McWade and City Manager Ken Domer are both in support of this project and have four signal control boxes that they think could be a good fit to use. BUSD representative Nikole Burgess shared with the group that she would bring this idea back to the district administrators to confirm that they would be supportive of this idea. 7. Summer Lunch Budget Assistant City Manager JR Ranells shared that the Tri- City Mental Health Community Well-Being Grant which has been a large part of the funding for the summer lunch program the past two years is available to YFAC again this year. Receiving this grant would bring about $7,000 towards the anticipated cost of $18,000 for the program. Additionally, YFAC has applied for another grant which could potentially fund the program for 3 years. 8. Public Comment YFAC Chair Rick Crosby proposed potentially moving the YFAC meetings to 5:30 or 6pm. There was overall positive reception by the Board and community members in attendance so City staff will bring back information regarding changing the bylaws to reflect a new time. Assistant City Manager JR Ranells noted that during February there will be a City Hall ADA compliance project that means we are unable to meet in the Council Chambers for the February meeting. The location of the meeting will be moved to another location. 9. Next Meeting The next YFAC meeting was scheduled for February 27, 2024. 10.
