LA VERNE YOUTH & FAMILY ACTION COMMITTEE Minutes of the Regular Meeting February 27, 2024 1. A meeting of the Youth & Family Action Committee was called to order by Chair Rick Crosby at 6:31 p.m. Executive Board Members present: Executive Board Rick Crosby, YFAC Chair, Council Member Wendy Lau, Mayor Pro Tem Greg Palatto, BUSD Denise Fisher, Resident 2. Review of Minutes Minutes for the January 23, 2024, meeting were approved. 3. SRO Report Student Resource Officer (SRO) Eduardo Burgos shared that there was a career fair at Ramona Middle School on February 26 which focused on careers in specialized trades. Representatives from Waste Management, La Verne Fire, La Verne Police, and more came to speak with students about careers in their fields. SRO Burgos reported that SGV Care has been working with the school district and responding to situations with students who are having mental crises and need support. 4. BUSD Report Mark Rodgers from BUSD reported that the career tech department is looking at summer opportunities for the kids to take advantage of in addition to organizing career fairs. The district is working on creating the summer elementary programs including summer daycare which will provide reading academies for students who need additional reading support. The district is focusing on removing barriers to providing access to supportive resources for the families who most need it. 5. Budget Update Assistant City Manager JR Ranells reported that during the mid-year budget process, City Council will formally adopt the YFAC budget into the City’s budget. He will report out the status of YFAC’s budget at a later meeting. 6. Teach & Transform Grant Assistant City Manager JR Ranells provided the group with an update on the new grant program sharing that there have been two submissions to date. The district is planning on doing another push out to staff and the deadline for submissions is March 21, 2024. Youth & Family Action Committee Minutes February 27, 2024, page 2 7. Meeting Time Consideration Assistant City Manager JR Ranells reported that the Youth & Family Action Committee bylaws allow for a change in the meeting time for the group. YFAC Chair Rick Crosby proposed a meeting time of 5:00 p.m. to the group which was approved by all present voting members. 8. Student Report The Bonita High School YFAC student liaisons reported to the group about things happening in the district right now. They shared that the second phase of the PACE Senior Project has been completed which involved volunteer hours and a research paper. The next stage of the project is to do a presentation in front of an oral board. Additionally, the students shared that the Culinary Arts class recently won a competition. 9. Public Comment Robin Carder asked the group about a program she heard about where students could leave campus for a religious program. Mark Rodgers of BUSD shared more about what he knew about the program including that the district is not involved in it. YFAC Chair Rick Crosby shared that he would like to have the La Verne Fire Department be invited to be a part of the Youth & Family Action Committee. Lieutenant Cory Leeper shared that the Little League leadership are also interested in joining the group. Councilmember Crosby noted that all organized programs for children would be welcome at YFAC. Mayor Pro Tem Wendy Lau shared information that Tri-Cities Mental Health has provided regarding the upcoming election and Proposition 1 and encouraged members of the community to learn about that proposition. 10. Next Meeting The next YFAC meeting was scheduled for March 26, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. 11. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 7:32 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Erin Beilstein Management Analyst
