On April 5, 1945, units from the American Fourth Armored Division of the Third Army were the first Americans to discover Ohrdruf, a Buchenwald sub-camp. On April 12, 1945, the day of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s death, Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower and Omar Bradley arrived in Ohrdruf. General Eisenhower sent a dispatch to General George Marshall, the US Chief of Staff describing the horrors he witnessed. He ordered US troops in the area to visit the camps to witness the atrocities. He also requested the US press to witness and report what was being discovered. Congressional delegations came to visit these concentration camps. Eisenhower stated that it was his duty as Supreme Allied Commander “...to testify about these things in case there ever grew up at home the belief...that the stories of Nazi brutality were just propaganda.” The US Millennial Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness Survey, the first 50 state survey on Holocaust knowledge among Millennial’s and Generation Z revealed a widespread lack of basic knowledge about the holocaust. New Hampshire’s rank in this survey was very close to the national average. On July 23, 2020, Governor Sununu signed legislation (which passed the Senate unanimously and the House by a vote of 299 in favor, 17 opposed) requiring that some form of basic Holocaust and Genocide education to be taught in all NH schools. With the enactment of this legislation NH became the 14 th State to require Holocaust and Genocide prevention education. P P This bill was supported by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester, the NH Council of Churches, the NH Institute for Civics Education, the Keene State University’s Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, the Jewish Federation of NH, the Anti-Defamation league, and many others. A diverse and highly qualified commission was established to find ways to implement this consistent with the NH formal rule-making process and a preliminary report will be issued. Our Nation is going through some difficult, painful times. We have seen a resurgence of some dark, dangerous acts and rhetoric. History, in particular, unremembered, and inaccurately remembered history, repeats itself. Many remember the horrific images of holocaust and other genocides. Unfortunately, fewer remember the causes, origins, and methods of the perpetrators. It is important to remember those of prominence and the many righteous people of extraordinary courage who at great personal risk provided shelter, comfort, and rescued victims.
