LAFAYETTE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Historic Preservation Commission Minutes August 27, 2012 7:00 PM Lafayette Board of Works Room Attendance: Kurt Wahl, Carrie Janney, Julie Ginn, Ellie Haan, Rick Schwarz, Scott Gilkey, Steve Meyer, Gale Payne Staff: Brian Bugajski Guests: None Seeing a quorum Commission President Kurt Wahl called the meeting to order at 7:01 pm. Approval of Minutes Steve moved to approve the minutes from the July 30, 2012 meeting. Rick seconded. The motion passed 7-0. Committee Reports Public Relations Committee Brian reported that the Public Relations Committee had not met prior to the meeting. District Committee Brian reported that the District Committee was contacted via e-mail correspondence concerning a request for inclusion within the existing 9th Street Hill Local Historic District. Brian noted that the owners of 609 South 9th Street, Paul & Olivia Schueler, submitted a voluntary inclusion petition to be included in the 9th Street Hill Local Historic District. Julie motioned to accept the inclusion request and recommend the addition to the City Council, Carrie provided a second and the motion was passed 7-0. COA Committee Rick reported that the COA Committee met on August 22nd to discuss the COA application for 113 North 5th Street on the agenda this evening. COA Requests 113 North 5th Street – Expansion of Outdoor Dining Area Applicant Jeff Hamann was not present, so Brian fielded questions on his behalf. Rick presented the application for the expansion of the outdoor dining area at the Knickerbocker Saloon located at 113 North 5th Street. Rick motioned to approve the application as submitted, Julie provided a second and the motion was opened for discussion. Steve asked if the existing awning was to be expanded over the new seating area. Scott indicated that it would not – the owner intends to use table umbrellas for shade. Kurt noted that the application did not include a drawing of the actual fencing design or written clarification that the new fence would match the existing. Brian stated that when he met on site with Jeff he indicated that the new fence would exactly match the existing. Steve motioned to amend the open motion so that the approval was contingent on the new fence exactly matching the existing. Rick seconded. Seeing no further discussion Kurt called for a vote on the amended motion and it passed 7-0. City of Lafayette Community development department 515 Columbia Street Lafayette, Indiana 47901 Phone: 765-807-1090 fax: 765-807-1099 LAFAYETTE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Staff Report Brian reported on the following items:  There had been no staff approvals during the month of August.  Brian reported on an e-mail that had been circulated earlier in the month concerning two historic properties owned by the Central Presbyterian Church located at 10-12 North 8th Street and 712-714 South Street currently threatened by demolition. Brian reported that he has contacted the church to arrange a meeting with Indiana Landmarks to discuss possible preservation solutions. Kurt asked the commissioners if they would be interested in a similar meeting to gather additional information on the topic. There was a collective agreement and Brian indicated that he would contact the church to arrange a meeting.  Brian presented a report by Global Green on the Historic Centennial Neighborhood. He noted that the number one recommendation of the report was to preserve and maintain the historic character of the neighborhood. Public Comment There was no public comment. Adjournment With no further public comment and no further business Rick moved to adjourn the meeting at 7:35 pm. Carrie seconded. The motion was approved 7-0. The next meeting of the Lafayette Historic Preservation Commission is scheduled for Monday, September 24, 2012 at 7:00pm in the Board of Works Room, Lafayette City Hall.
