Lafayette Human Relations Commission Minutes for Meeting 24 January 2013 Present: Dewayne, Joel, Cheryl, Jamille, CJ, Bryan, Carina Absent: Christy, Randy Staff Present: Aimee 1. Call to order @ 5:30 p.m. 2. Introductions were given by each member present. Four students from Jefferson HS were present to observe the meeting. 3. Approval of Oct. 25, 2012 minutes: correction by Cheryl; motion Cheryl, Second Joel, passed unanimously 4. Complaints since last meeting: a. Complaint received for being charged against LUM by individual. Complainant did not want mediation. Went to investigation, complainant did not contact investigators; investigation with LUM indicated charge was within their policies. Case closed. b. Second complaint due to housing was received that was referred to Indiana Civil Rights Commission. 5. Old business: a. Dewayne put together draft of document on process for how commission investigates cases. Requests that we review and provide comments to Dewayne before next commission meeting. Discussion had about this falling under training committee. 6. New business: a. Carina asked about if we obtained business cards for the commissioners. Cards not made yet, Carina will forward email to Aimee for city. b. Dewayne requested status of updating the ordinance. Ordinance committee Carina, Bryan, Randy. No movement. c. Discussion about committees and involvement of those outside the commission, to receive input from others. Dewayne will follow up on any age requirement. d. Dewayne shared that Jamie Jackson at WLFI recommended about coming to noon show and discussing about the commission and what we do. Asked for volunteers to help appear. Aimee also suggested the city has a Facebook and Twitter page and are looking for regular pieces and could take advantage of the press. Dewayne, CJ, and Bryan (in reserve) to be interviewed.
