Call meeting to order 12:02 p.m. Present: Chad Aldridge, Mary Alyce Bolinger, Kara Boyles, Cliff Cox, Stephen Smith, Cassie Wade, Joel Wright a. Approval of January 24, 2019 Minutes b. Cliff made motion to approve, Kara seconded, all approve, minutes passed 2. Old business a. Review HRC brochure updates: Reviewed final version of brochure. No changes recommended. Brochure on website. Discussed where to have printed versions of brochures. Print on standard copy paper, have paper versions at sites around the community. Location options: McCallister Center, Bauer, YWCA, Northend Community Center, LTHC. Cassie will provide Megan with # of brochures to be printed, will pick up and deliver to sites around community. 3. New Business a. Yateman Complaint: Megan provided update. Only complaint since January. Complaint received on March 19. Megan called complainant, informed her about ICRC, decided to file complaint with ICRC. HRC not able to investigate complaint since chose to file with ICRC. 4. Stephen provided update regarding joint meetings between all commissions. Stephen has been in email communication, all commissions on board. Need to finalize how often to meet, when to meet, who should attend meeting. Charlie Shook needed to confirm with WL Mayor. Stephen asked Megan if the Mayor should approve. Megan to discuss with Kim to determine if needs to be discussed with Mayor. Brainstormed meeting 3 x a year. Goal would be around sharing ideas, collaboration, best practices. Discussion about frequency and who should attend. Mary Alyce: Chair and Vice Chair to attend 3 x year Kara: Recommended strategically planned to discuss collaboration for festivals Stephen: Likes the idea of having open and available for all members to attend vs. just Chair and Vice Chair. If moving forward with Chair and Vice Chair it would be similar to Leadership Steering Committee. Chad: Recommended having sooner vs. later prior to our July meeting. 5. Staff Report a. Social Media-Using City of Lafayette accounts: Megan sent us marketing email, subject should read Human Relations Commission Social Media Post. Megan will also send us City staff’s email if marketing email does not work. b. Indiana Human Rights Consortium Annual State Conference: Megan provided information about conference. Mayor has approved budget for commission $1,000.00. Commission can use to send. Stephen asked if anyone interested in attending. Stephen is interested and believes that Susan may be interested. Stephen will follow up with Susan to see if she wants to attend. Megan to follow up to determine if we can share membership and commission members go on different days. Cassie advised can attend a portion of the conference if no one else can. i. June 17-20, 2019 ii. $250 per member Next Meeting July 25 6. Adjourn a. Larry Dunfey (unsure spelling), born in the City of Lafayette. Biological name Larry Fields. Discussed his family history, pride in Lafayette, southern pride. Discussed bias that people have, education system in his belief is not teaching right. Discussed political views, support of President Trump. Talked about being booted out of locations (liberal setting), wife and son have problem hearing, are discriminated against. Reported being bullied by local police. Reported he is a white national. Provided overview of white nationalism. Asked commission members to educate community about white nationalism, love Lafayette, born here. Discussed his right to be here, world needs educated, taught a lesson. It is people like the commission members that can educate others. Stephen thanked for participation, provided overview of commission, and options to file complaint. Larry advised that he did not want to file a complaint and thanked commission members. Motion to readjourn 12:53 p.m. Cassie motioned, Kara seconded, all approved.
