LAFAYETTE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD
REGULAR MEETING
4:00 pm
January 22, 2018
The City of Lafayette Park and Recreation Board met in regular meeting, January 22, 2018 at
4:00 pm at the Rush Pavilion in Columbian Park.
The meeting was called to order by Park Board President John Ragan. The Board members
present were Mr. Victor Klinker, Mr. Dave Mecklenburg, and Mr. Maurie Denney. Parks
Superintendent Claudine Laufman, Parks Director of Operations Jon Miner, and Recording
Secretary Carlynn Smith were present. Parks staff members present were Mike Perry, Dana
Rhodes, Ben Taylor, and Skyler Viray
New Business: Election of Officers for 2018
Upon motion by Mr. Denney, seconded by Mr. Klinker, and unanimously carried, Dave
Mecklenburg was elected President.
Upon motion by Mr. Klinker, seconded by Mr. Ragan, and unanimously carried, Maurie
Denney was elected Vice-President.
Upon motion by Mr. Ragan, seconded by Mr. Denney, and unanimously carried, Victor
Klinker was elected Secretary.
Upon motion by Mr. Ragan, seconded by Mr. Klinker, and unanimously carried, Carlynn
Smith was elected Recording Secretary.
Upon motion by Mr. Klinker, seconded by Mr. Denney, and unanimously carried, minutes of the
December 11, 2017 Park Board meeting were approved.
Upon motion by Mr. Denney, seconded by Mr. Klinker, and unanimously carried, claims in the
amount of $594,386.48 were approved.
Superintendent’s Report:
Superintendent Laufman introduced Sammi Franklin, one of four Purdue students who
are marketing interns for the spring semester. Some of their work will include reviewing
our marketing strategies/practices already in place, researching current marketing trends
in other parks departments, and proposing ideas to enhance and expand our marketing
endeavors.
Construction updates: Weather permitting, the bronze medallions will be installed this
week as Phase 2 of the Memorial Island project nears completion. Work at Crosser Sports
Complex has been delayed due to weather conditions.
Held at McAllister in December, the first ever Donuts with Santa was a success, with 208
participants. Also a new event at McAllister, a father-daughter dance will be held
February 17. So far, 31 registrations have been received. A photographer will take
pictures of the attendees and carriage rides will be available.
All areas are preparing for the upcoming season.

Director of Operations Jon Miner reported the following:
o Katy’s Cabin at the Murdock sledding hill has been open 10 day thus far in the
season. Sledders can purchase concessions and rent sliding tubes as well. Social
media is used to communicate to the public when Katy’s Cabin is open.
o Seasonal jobs are now posted on the City of Lafayette’s website and applications
are coming in.
o Once again, a lifeguard certification class will be offered. Information has just
been released.
Declaration of Surplus Property:
Upon motion by Mr. Denney, seconded by Mr. Klinker, and unanimously carried, a list
of items was declared worthless property. (See attachment A.)
Old Business:
Upon motion by Mr. Denney, seconded by Mr. Ragan, and unanimously carried, the 2018
hourly and daily fees for the rental of Rush Pavilion were approved. These were
corrections from the December 11, 2017 meeting. (See attachment B.)
Communications:
Written: Jon Miner read an email he had received from Lindsey Manz regarding the
possibility of the purchase and installation of a particular piece of playground equipment.
He paraphrased his response that such a swing was recently installed at the McCaw Park
playground. A copy of the email is available in the Parks Department office.
There being no further business to come before the meeting, on motion by Mr. Ragan, seconded
by Mr. Klinker and unanimously carried, the meeting adjourned at 4:29.
