City of Lake Forest Park Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Regular Meeting Summary August 26, 2025 CALL TO ORDER: 7:02 P.M. PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Tyler Dittman, Josh Rosenau, Richie Allen, Amy Hanegan, Linda Holman, Maurice Jones Jr STAFF AND OTHERS PRESENT: Cory Roche – Environmental & Sustainability Specialist Councilmember Ashton McCartney Kim Josund – LFP Stewardship Foundation President John Brew – LFP Stewardship Foundation Secretary/Treasurer MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC PRESENT: Matt Muilenburg WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS Round of Introductions ADOPTION OF AGENDA Josh motioned to approve the agenda, Linda seconded the motion to approve, the agenda was approved unanimously. REVIEW/APPROVE MEETING MINUTES No minutes to review/approve at this meeting. BUSINESS  Presentation & Discussion with the LFP Stewardship Foundation John and Kim from the LFP Stewardship Foundation joined to give a bit of background and history of the LFP Stewardship Foundation and thanking all volunteers of Lake Forest Park. Kim went through a PowerPoint presentation, noting the LFP Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF) was originally founded from the efforts of saving Grace Cole Nature Park, and ever since the LFPSF has helped gain 24 acres of Parks and Open Space, published the Salmons guide to Lake Forest Park, and helps with grant writing and work parties. Second large campaign was to save Five Acre Woods, along with the new addition of the rose property adding 2 acres to Five Acre Woods. There has been many other projects the collaborate with the City on like adding benches to parks  and educational signs but noted along with park projects, they help with monitoring development, fighting tree canopy loss, advocate strong conservation policies, support local research projects like the streamkeepers monitoring, instream habitat projects, school salmon projects, community outreach, and more. Tyler thanked the stewardship foundation and noted how they are a key connection through all different projects. John noted the Stewardship Foundation has raised around 850k through the years and typically all goes back into the parks. Councilmember McCartney wondered about fundraising events and if they host events or anything? John mentioned that typically their funding is coming through families from the area with large donations. Noted there has been fundraising events in the past but have not had one or needed one since the pandemic, they have been managing well through grants and other avenues projects are capable of.  Blue Heron Park Linda noted she has been at it for around 35 years trying to keep up with Blue Heron Park, located on a salmon spawning creek and near the town center entrance off of SR 522. Welcoming area and good spot for environmental education. Will coordinate a work party by starting to clean up the invasives and see what plants are under there then see what needs to be replanted. Linda is also working on the climate hub at the town center and noted it will be a good place to utilize park projects on.  Summer Events Updates Cory noted Picnic in the Park is coming up, family friendly event with music, food trucks and more along with Paws in the Park and the Annual LFP Yard Sale. Battle of the Bands was brought back and a success, just some sound issues, but looking forward to having a bigger and better Battle of the Bands next year.  Lakefront Property Updates Cory let the group know with the KC Parks Levy passing, Rod Dembowski allocated 4 million for the Lakefront Project construction to add to the funding gap, Council gave the go ahead to continuing design at previous Council Meeting.  Other Horizon View Art installation project is moving along, the concrete pad will be installed early September, and in October the Artist will come back to install the final art piece. There was a community mosaic workshop day held at the commons where 70 people participated in. Community revel and celebration will take place after the installation. Josh noted there is a Rotarian who does an Instagram live Pilates class, Instagram has changed rules so they cannot do live classes, following needs to have at least 1000 followers, and wondering if the board could help or promote at parks and city Instagram as it could be an extension of the yoga in the parks. Cory would have to look into this, could potentially be a partnership, not sure if it could be through Instagram live, but sure there is a partnership to figure out.  Ashton wondered if there is a Park list to connect to do a similar program like the library reads. Cory noted the group has talked about ideas like this or scavenger hunt. Group just has not made movement, but there have been many ideas thrown out there. Amy noted the pickler ballers at Horizon view is requesting wind screens and benches up at the Horizon View court. Cory will follow up with Amy and see what sort of funding there may be. Richie noted the storyboard’s have been switched around at the parks, one or two sets have been vandalized, but other parks are looking good, and people are enjoying the books, some feedback is interesting, but overall going well and coordinating with the Library Story Walk at Horizon View. Ashton thanked the Parks Board for doing the story book walk, including Spanish language. Cory will coordinate September meeting through emails, but board will need to move the September meeting from the 23rd. PUBLIC COMMENTS None ADJOURN: 8:23 PM
