Citizen and Police Community Relations Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes 4140 Ashton Club Drive, Lake Wales, FL 33859 February 22, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. 1. CALL TO ORDER & ROLL CALL The meeting was opened with prayer. Members Present: Andy Oguntola, Tiffany Davis, Moe Moyer, Griffin Crosby (alternate for Troy Schulze) Staff Present: Police Chief Chris Velasquez, Community Liaison Officer Ed Palmer, and Executive Assistant Judi Gladue. 2. SPEAKERS Each committee member introduced themselves to the group. Chairman Oguntola introduced himself last and added that the purpose of this committee is to strengthen the community’s relationship with the police department. Chief Velasquez started the meeting by going over the “Resolving Issues” pamphlet. Chairman Oguntola asked if there were any questions or comments regarding the inside of the pamphlet before moving on. Tiffany Davis commented on the driver’s license portion of the pamphlet, and she asked if the pamphlet could elaborate more on the topic of consent to search a vehicle. Chairman Oguntola asked if there could be a similar, quick flip, pamphlet geared toward the students where there is less wording and possibly more colorful for emphasis. He also mentioned that a message could be added that a driver should continue to a lighted area before pulling over. He asked if an E-Mail box could be created on the front of the pamphlet, which can be geared toward a Q&A. In addition, would it be possible to have a scan code. Discussions were held among the members and group regarding traffic stop protocol, educating at the schools, educating students, and student volunteers working in schools. Chief Velasquez reported that the police department would be acquiring eight body cameras. He advised that the contract has been executed, but it could be six to eight weeks before the cameras are received. Policies are being written, and there will be training. Sandy Odom expressed the concern of a privacy issue, and at some time would like to share with the committee what the NAACP is suggesting. Chief Velasquez added that this is not a temporary program, for we are in it to have it last. We will have eight cameras soon and will add more. 3. ADJOURN The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
