HOOPER RENWICK LEGACY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MINUTES Tuesday, January 21, 2020 Gwinnett Municipal Association Large Conference Room - 3rd Floor 6:00 PM 70 S. Clayton St, GA 30046 Call to Order Chairman Bailey recognizing a quorum called the meeting to order at 6:08 pm. Chairman Bailey prayed for the meeting. Finalize Meeting Schedule Chuck Warbington said there has been a staffing change in regards to the Committee. Lisa Sherman resigned from her position with the City. The doodle poll showed that majority of the Committee members are available to meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 6 pm - 8 pm.  Committee Member Crawford said there maybe some months she might arrive late due to Election Board meetings. 2. Discussion Regarding Curator Chuck Warbington said he has a call with Lauren Baeza the Director of Exhibitions (curator) for the National Center for Civil and Human Rights Center in Atlanta on January 24, 2020. Committee Member Crawford suggested that Chuck also speak with Melissa Jest, she is the African American Programs Coordinator for the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Chuck will send out email updates to the Committee regarding his phone meetings with the curators and his upcoming meeting with Commissioner Marlene Fosque. Within the next 30 to 60 days, the Committee needs to gather documentation of the artifacts they have access to for Hooper Renwick. This needs to be discussed further at the February meeting. The City will be doing a public call for artifacts for another project in March, maybe we can do a public call for artifacts for Hooper Renwick in late spring. The City will take care of storing the items in climate controlled areas.. He will work on the legal piece. Once we know the items we have will have a clearer picture of what the plans should entail. All of the information will move to Gwinnett County once we know the overall plan and what the Committee prefers. Documenting is vital to this project. Who will have ownership of the artifacts and where do we house them. Chairman Bailey mentioned that someone needs to speak with the Principal at Central Gwinnett High School regarding some of the Hooper Renwick items that used to be housed at the school. Chuck Warbington mentioned that the City has some photos they received from the library, but he needs members of the Committee to verify and give names of the people in the photos. Various ideas from the Committee:  Chairman Bailey - we need to get the Facebook page active. Social media will be a good launch pad. We need a list of the schools and churches in the county.  Committee Member Daniel - we need to engage the churches and community.  Chairman Bailey - we need to ask the curators about how we should refurbish and care for the artifacts. We need a think tank type of meeting with others in the community in attendance. Chuck requested they send the details of the meeting to Paula so she could advertise it, publish the agenda, and the minutes.  Committee Member Taylor - we should engage the schools at the same time we engage the churches.  Committee Member Bailey requested that Glenn Martin take photos of the homes in the old Lawrenceville Housing Authority area that are about to be torn down.  Chuck Warbington confirmed that he has photos right after the homes were built.  3. Discussion Regarding Field Trip Chuck Warbington asked the Committee members to gather a list of places that would possibly want to visit that are similar to what we are hoping to accomplish at Hooper Renwick. Please do not keep your list to only museums. Please send your thoughts and information on each option to Chairman Bailey. Final Adjournment Chairman Bailey asked the Committee to remember former Council Member Tony Powell and his family in their prayers due to the recent passing of Tony's wife, Emily. Tony was instrumental in the Hooper Renwick project. He drafted the resolution. Chairman Bailey adjourned the meeting at 7:05 pm.
