LAWRENCEVILLE ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, February 08, 2022 GwMA Large Conference Room - 3rd Floor 6:00 PM 70 S. Clayton St, GA 30046 Entrance to City Hall for all City meetings is through the lower level doors accessible from Church Street Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 6:03 PM recognizing a quorum. Approval of Agenda Motion to approve the agenda was made by Commission Member Alhabashi, Seconded by Commission Member Stone-Collins. Voting Yea: Commission Member Hammond, Commission Member Chitwood, Commission Member Stone-Collins, Commission Member Walden, Commission Member Alhabashi Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes 1. Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes Motion to approve the prior meeting minutes was made by Commission Member Stone- Collins, Seconded by Commission Member Chitwood. Voting Yea: Commission Member Hammond, Commission Member Chitwood, Commission Member Stone-Collins, Commission Member Walden, Commission Member Alhabashi General Discussion 2. Sub-Committee Check-In There are currently three subcommittees. Amber shared that members have been assigned to the subcommittees and meetings will begin soon. The subcommittees will need to elect a Chair and determine which projects they would like to work on. The three committees are Community Outreach, Grants and Branding and PR.  Aura-Leigh Sanders is currently working on a small grant for a mural that will match up to $4,000. McCray's has offered their building for a mural installation after they have painted, and we are waiting on their timeline. 3. Community Mural Update Jasmine Billings shared that the wall located on Jackson Street at the Post Office is owned by Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), and she has spoken with them regarding this project. GDOT would like to see the proposed artwork for the wall due to their concern that a community project would have people painting whatever they wanted. Jasmine advised them how the project will work. The theme for this mural will be Gateway Mural, and an Invitational Call will be made to a prechosen group of artists. Artists can come up with their own ideas based on the location and theme, and should include a rendering with their submission. The submission should also include preparing and priming the wall and artist upkeep for two (2) years. The use of donated paint was discussed and determined that the design may allow for inconsistencies in paint color but there may also be a variation with uneven or inconsistent coverage. Alice will reach out to some artists to see if she can get an idea on what costs would be involved. Jasmine spoke with City leadership to see if it is OK to get the required information from artists to submit to GDOT for their approval. We will need to receive the submissions, review and choose our top choices and present them to Council for a recommendation to proceed. Members will bring examples of artists they wish to reach out to for the group to review. 4. Retreat Update Although this item was flagged to be tabled for the next meeting, schedules dictated the Retreat timeframe. Therefore, this item has been completed. 5. Budget Update Jasmine Billings provided a brief update, indicating that the mural project is technically a Capital Project, and is working on determine the cost. The Depot District signs have been put on hold for now, and the Purchasing Department is determining how to move forward. The Arts Commission will need to work on art and where that will be placed. The Roundabouts will be a project the group can work on throughout the year to determine what will be placed there. 6. City Project Guidance Jasmine Billings was asked to get guidance from the Arts Commission members on a project that the City is working on to hide gas pipes around the city. Barry Mock provided several ideas for the group to review, and their preferences will be forwarded on to Barry. Other Business Amber Walden shared that Cheryl of the Lawrenceville Women's club inquired about the plans for DTLRocks and Branding. She asked for literature to be able to hand out, like a one pager. Business cards with a QR code may be possible, with the QR code directed to the Arts Commission website. Citizen Comments Comments are limited to two (2) minutes per person. Arts Commission members will not respond to comments. There were no Citizen comments.
