LAWRENCEVILLE ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, May 10, 2022 3rd Floor GwMA Large Conference Room 6:00 PM 70 S. Clayton St, GA 30046 Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 6:05 PM, recognizing a quorum. Approval of Agenda Motion to approve the agenda was made by Commission Member Fellows, Seconded by Commission Member Alhabashi. Voting Yea: Commission Member Fellows, Commission Member Chitwood, Commission Member Stone-Collins, Commission Member Alhabashi Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes 1. Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes Motion to approve prior meeting minutes was made by Commission Member Stone-Collins, Seconded by Commission Member Alhabashi. Voting Yea: Commission Member Fellows, Commission Member Chitwood, Commission Member Stone-Collins, Commission Member Alhabashi General Discussion 2. Grants Committee Sponsorships were discussed and Alice Stone-Collins advised that she could share some of the links she has found for Sponsorships. The applications are very clear and are normally limited to the non-profit sector with the dollar amount usually capped around $1,500. These  websites also indicated when the applications would be reviewed. Information was very clear and very basic. The Capital Budget for Arts Commission is $245,000, with $5,000 being allocated to branding items like tents. Jasmine Billings advised she will be meeting with John Christy from the Georgia Mural Trail, and that she is coming up with a list of items Lawrenceville is known for to possibly include in the mural. John indicated that there are other grants out there that the Arts Commission could look into, like a ghost grant that refurbishes/refreshes old murals like Coke. The Knights Foundation selects cities based on their comprehensive plan, and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs had a lot of other grants that the Arts Commission can look into. 3. Community Outreach Update The car show event went well, with a steady stream of people coming by the DTLRocks tent. The need for more rocks was discussed, and possibly adding an additional table. A new tent and tent size was also discussed, since the one they are currently using is on loan. Transportation to events that are not located at the Lawn may be an issue, so they may not participate in Oktoberfest. It was determined that it would be better for DTLRocks to attend events that take place on the Lawn for easier access to water and ease of transporting supplies. City staff can assist as they can, but they have other responsibilities as well. Volunteers can be used as runners to help, and the ultimate goal would be for volunteers to be able to run DTLRocks. Other items discussed included Arts Commission member signing up for at least one event, shortening the amount of time at each event, a rolling cart to transport supplies, water jugs, and a logo'd tent. 4. Branding Committee Update The Branding Committee has not had a chance to meet. Jasmine Billings indicated that business cards previously discussed will not be an issue and can include a logo on one side. She suggested the Arts Commission also consider getting rack cards that they can distribute at events throughout the year. 5. Community Mural Jasmine Billings shared that she met with the City of Hawkinsville to discuss murals. They utilized Color the World, which is a subsidiary of the University of Georgia, who can design and paint a mural. They did not use the design they came up with, rather went with a graphic designer who ultimately designed the mural, although Color the World was utilized to complete the work. They chose to not include people in the mural as people find them hard to identify with. In addition, the community painted the larger background color and not the details of the mural itself.  Alice has been saving artist information that deal in more abstract design due to the difficulty in painting on a brick wall, and samples were shown to provide an idea of what the project could look like. Details for the budgeting of the project were discussed, and a dollar amount will need to be determined prior to putting the call out to artists. It will also need to be determined if the cost of supplies will be set aside in a separate budget or if they will be included in the overall project amount. The group discussed the overall project cost and determined that the invitation will be sent out to select artists without a dollar amount listed for the project costs to see what they get back, and will more forward from there. Motion to approve the Call for Art for the community mural was made by Commission Member Fellows, Seconded by Commission Member Stone-Collins. Voting Yea: Commission Member Fellows, Commission Member Chitwood, Commission Member Stone-Collins, Commission Member Alhabashi 6. Georgia Mural Trail Jasmine Billings shared that she will be meeting with the artist to measure the wall and discuss additional charges due to the additional requested work. She will let the group know when that meeting has been set up in case a member would like to be present. The artist asked the group to determine what type of design they would like to see (modern, traditional, etc.). Jasmine will forward him the list of staples from the community to see what he will be able to incorporate. The artist indicated his timeline for completion is November, which is very reasonable. 7. Georgia Gwinnett College Art Involvement Gallery Space at Georgia Gwinnett College will be ready in the next couple of years on their campus, and the hope is to start a membership, have events, etc. They will be teaching a 3D design class next spring, and although the art pieces will not be a good fit for the roundabouts in the college corridor, hopefully they can be shown throughout the downtown area. GGC has a steel drum band, and they hope to be able to perform at some of the lawn events. The conversation has been started and the new dean is very interested and vested in the arts. 8. Paver Art This agenda item has been tabled. This project was presented to the Arts Commission to provide a guide on the art for this, however, Engineering has the project and the budget. Other Business Jasmine Billings shared that Shoe Horn Alley has the gas lights installed. Citizen Comments Comments are limited to two (2) minutes per person. Arts Commission members will not respond to comments. There were no citizen comments.
