General Discussion
Board Member Check-In
There was a brief board member check-in, sharing personal updates. The Hooper-Renwick Themed
Library groundbreaking ceremony was a prominent part of this check-in. Hooper-Renwick was the
only school in Gwinnett County for African-American children. Tiffany Washington, on behalf of the
advisory board, gave special recognition to Coni Brown. Ms. Coni, along with her sisters, was
educated at Hooper-Renwick and had the privilege of attending a groundbreaking ceremony earlier
in the day. The groundbreaking celebrated the partnership between City and County, between local
civic leaders, and the Hooper-Renwick Legacy Preservation Committee; this partnership is creating a
new library (in the former school building) for downtown Lawrenceville which will simultaneously
honor the legacy of Black education in Gwinnett County. The board was excited about the
significance of the groundbreaking for our County, our City, and especially for Ms. Coni.
ReCAST Year 1 Recap Video
The board watched a “year-in-review” style mini-documentary that shared the story of ReCAST thus
far.
Program Manager Update
Program Manager, Marcus Thorne, shared about four prominent updates from the ReCAST Monthly
Milestones Report: 1) the training of City staff in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is 98% complete with
a plan in place to train the remaining 2%; 2) The City of Lawrenceville’s yet-to-be-named diversity,
equity, and inclusion staff council has been formed; 3) A new location for ReCAST collaborative
services has been approved by Council and the ReCAST team has begun relocating the new facility;
4) The memorandum of understanding between Gwinnett County Public Schools and the City of
Lawrenceville has been executed and is fully in place. Special thanks were offered to those who
worked behind the scenes providing guidance and support – in particular to Nancy Martin.
Additionally, board members asked questions and received updates regarding outreach, youth
engagement, and the ReCAST referral process. Marcus Thorne shared new ReCAST materials,
translated into Spanish. Jen Young (Executive Director of Impact46, a sub-recipient partner of
ReCAST) was present and provided helpful updates alongside the program manager.
Advisory Board Schedule Discussion
The program manager reviewed the draft version of next year’s advisory board meeting schedule. No
objections were raised to the schedule.
