Jones Amy Potter Losh Karl Wankowicz Kim Schoolcraft Captain Anthony Hera Stacey Warner Absent: Dr. Betsy Robinson Meeting was called to order at 6:10 p.m. Agenda: Public Comment No public comments New Shelter Update The building is progressing on schedule and should be complete mid-October to early November. There is a possible delay with the delivery of the cat cages and kennel doors. Ordering will begin for supplies, furniture, and fixtures. All items at the present facility will be evaluated to determine what can be used at the new shelter and what can be disposed of. There is concern that there will not be enough parking at the new facility to accommodate the number of visitors. Options for overflow parking will be addressed once the facility is up and running. Foster Program There are 221 animals in foster care (45 dogs; 176 cats) and over 100 families registered with the foster care program. There are more animals in foster care than are currently in the shelter. The success of the program helps to keep the shelter at a no kill status. Volunteer Report For the 2nd quarter, volunteers logged 3,886 hours doing a variety of tasks in the shelter and off-site locations. Each month the number of volunteers range between 72 and 91. Year to date volunteers have logged 8,431 hours. Quarterly / Year-End Shelter Statistics The shelter intake for the 2nd quarter was 698 animals with an overall live release rate of 93.6% (98.7% dogs; 84% cats). The decrease in live release for cats can be attributed to 22 neo-natal kittens that died in care. During this quarter 242 kittens under the age of 5 months and 112 adult cats entered the shelter. Year to date the shelter intake is 1254 animals with an overall release rate of 95.2% (98% dogs; 89% cats). This period includes 382 of the intakes were kittens and 197 were puppies. Almost all the puppies and kittens were vaccinated at intake and immediately sent out to foster homes. Shelter News LaKeisha Shaw was introduced to the committee. She has filled the vacant position of Animal Control Supervisor and is a graduate of Texas A&M University with previous animal shelter experience. Most recently she was the manager of a boarding facility in the Houston area. Her training will begin to obtain her animal control State certification. The annual Paws and Claws Adopt a Thon is scheduled for August 20 & 21 at Hometown Heroes Park. Other area shelters will join the event and free microchipping and low-cost vaccinations will be offered on both days. The shelter will participate in the National Clear the Shelters event in August and a garage sale will be held in September to clear out the garage and shed prior to moving into the new facility. Through the Friends of League City animal shelter, 15 dogs have completed full heartworm treatment and 9 more are scheduled for treatment soon. The shelter attempts to test all dogs as they become available for adoption. Dogs with positive results are put on the list for treatment and ones with negative results are started on a preventative treatment. The next meeting is scheduled for October 16, 2019.
