Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee Meeting Minutes for November 2, 2021 At 6:08 p.m. League City Chair Jackie Liddell officially called the meeting to order. Instead of the normal meeting location, committee members met at the Water Hall House and the former site of the Butler Longhorn Museum and were given a tour of the building before the meeting began. Committee members Dave Bowman, Jason Makepeace, Nina Makepeace, Beth Sears, and Jill Reason were present. Also in attendance were League City employees Rosa Salcido and Sarah Greer Osborne. One citizen, Richard Williams, addressed the board. A motion was made by Jackie Liddell to accept the minutes from the September 7, 2021 meeting. Nina Makepeace seconded the motion. Everyone who was present voted yes. Sarah G. Osborne gave an update regarding city projects. The JC league statue will represent an older version of the man. The statue will include his dog and he will be wearing a three-piece suit with a long coat and two-tone shoes. His hands will be extended with one hand holding a hat. The plan is to unveil the finished work on May 14, 2022. Dave Bowman commented that the hat drawn by the artist looked flat and his pocket watch looked small. Sarah replied that new renderings were being created showing greater detail. Osborne discussed the signal box murals and gave details on completion dates. The group unanimously selected the boat theme mural to be created by Debi Starr. Jackie Liddell asked if the committee could go out and see the work while it is being done. The Public Art and Community Development Coordinator agreed to forward a map indicating the locations of the work being done. Jackie Liddell and Dave Bowman offered to take old cameras to the photography art show to create center pieces prior to the November 5th exhibit opening. The December Art show featuring CCISD holiday cards was also discussed. Osborne asked the committee for theme ideas for upcoming shows in the art gallery which will now be held quarterly. Some of the ideas included: America proud, Texas proud, what inspires you? landscapes, seascapes, flowers, new beginnings, recycled art, metalwork, woodwork, pet portraits, animals, and art by students in elementary, middle, and high schools. Nina Makepeace mentioned that rodeo art created by CCISD students can be displayed at the Longhorn Museum for an extended period. She suggested that perhaps 15 pieces could be shown for each of the 5 high schools. Osborne also talked about the 60th year celebration and the gathering of photos to be displayed from 1800-1900 and 1900’s to present time. These photos would be on display from April-May or May-June of 2022. Jason Makepeace made additional suggestions for art gallery themes including watercolor, fishing, craftsmen making lures or fishing as a theme. Liddell chimed in with suggestions on painting fish “1960’s style Plexiglas or painted canvas that hangs off rope. Nina Makepeace suggested music themed art and Jason mentioned making his own Frankenstein that plays a black fender guitar. Osborne commented on the artifacts left behind in the barn area adjacent to the Longhorn Museum. She suggested that perhaps the crop equipment and plow can be made into art. Some of the items need to be assessed by the historical society to determine how old they are. There was also a discussion about CCISD’s participation in the signal box mural wrap project. The winning school will have a signal box wrapped in the winning design. Dave Bowman was involved in the Fall Sweep where he collected 22 bags (227 lbs.) of trash. Osborne discussed another Fall Sweep volunteer event scheduled at Ghirardhi Watersmart park on November 20th. She talked about beautification efforts including sealing a fence, laying out crushed rock and creating a kindness rock garden. Jackie, Beth and Nina inquired about participating in the event. The committee was asked to give feedback on the design for the caboose to be painted by Adam Socie. The design included an oversized conductor holding a giant ticket. Bowman suggested an option to make the ticket “changeable” so a visitor can personalize his or her own. Jason Makepeace suggested the base ticket be made permanent and include the words “League City” on the conductor’s hat. Mr. Makepeace also added that including a longhorn or tree on the ticket would be a nice detail. Nina asked when the mural was going to be painted so she could stop by and see the artist in action. Osborne touched on additional work to be done in 2022. Including outdoor murals on the “Blue Building”. She mentioned planting a seed and finding people interested in creating a non-profit (501c) art alliance. Committee members threw out a few names. Jason Makepeace suggested Deborah Kendritch, Jackie LIddel mentioned Dr. Terry Williams (who sponsored an Art Alliance show). Another suggestion made by Mr. Makepeace was Lawndale or a silent auction. Osborne mentioned the “Diamond Ball” and the idea of charging a $100 entry fee as a fundraising opportunity. The goal is to work towards others creating a non-profit. The meeting was adjourned by Liddell at 7:14 p.m.
