Meeting Minutes June 6, 2023 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Jackie Liddell. Present were Richard Williams, Frank Zgonc, Beth Sears, Lisette McClung, Jackie Liddell, Jill Reason, Dave Bowman, and Jason Makepeace (who arrived at 6:13 PM). Also present for the meeting was Director of Communications and Community Engagement Sarah Osborne, Parks Coordinator John Orsag, and resident Aydin Bowman. A motion to approve the minutes from the May 2 meeting was made by Richard Williams and seconded by Dave Bowman. All present agreed to approve the minutes. Osborne then led a discussion selecting the six designs for the next phase of the mini-mural project. The following artists and their designs were selected for traffic signal boxes along League City Parkway: Anat Ronen (fish), Doug Hiser (woodpeckers), Elizabeth Umanzor (bees), Joy Matheson (squirrel and rabbit), Adam Socie (bluebonnet), and Emily Ding (waiting to receive design). Osborne then held a conversation about the proposed rules and criteria she developed with Orsag for the traffic signal box public art project. The project would select artists’ submissions to be wrapped on traffic signal boxes throughout the City. The proposed guidelines developed by Osborne and Orsag were developed using best practices and content from other Texas cities that have held “open calls” or competitions among residents to submit a design for a traffic box. The group discussed project guidelines, eligibility requirements, funding, etc. Osborne will adjust the rules and criteria and send it to Legal for approval. The group next received an update on the upcoming White Linen Night Art Event. It was reported that over 150 artists were registered for booths. Volunteer training was taking place this week for the 150 volunteers that will be needed. The group thought it would be a great idea to obtain sponsorships for next year’s event as soon as possible. They also discussed the possibility of charging artists for booth spaces in 2024. Osborne gave an update on City Projects. The pavilion at Lynn Gripon Park at Countryside is being remodeled. Local professional artist Elizabeth Umanzor will be painting a mural along an outside section of the pavilion. The mural will hopefully be completed by July. Another project taking place is located on the side wall of the Rustic Oaks Park pavilion. This project will have resident and artist Liz Hornick create mosaic panels to add some color to the building. The design of the panels is still yet to be determined. Finally, there was a discussion about a possible Veteran’s Memorial at Hometown Heroes Park. This would also include moving the current monuments and statues from the Sportsplex to Hometown Heroes Park. Several members of the Committee then provided comments to the group. Richard Williams mentioned the plans for the Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation booth at the upcoming White Linen Night Art Event. After members were finished with their comments Orsag added that a resolution will be going before City Council on June 13 for the Bee City USA certification. Osborne and Orsag then talked about the Texas-New Mexico Power Company Tree Project that will be located at Hometown Heroes Park. The area will show individuals what types of trees you can plant under and around power lines. The meeting was adjourned at 7:31 PM.
