Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee

Meeting Minutes July 5, 2023 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Jackie Liddell. Present were Richard Williams, Frank Zgonc, Beth Sears, Jackie Liddell, Jill Reason, and Dave Bowman. Also present for the meeting was Director of Communications and Community Engagement Sarah Osborne and Parks Coordinator John Orsag. A motion to approve the minutes from the June 6 meeting was made by Frank Zgonc and seconded by Jill Reason. All present agreed to approve the minutes. Osborne gave an update on the traffic signal box wrap contest. The contest guidelines have been approved by the Legal Department and are ready to go. We are looking to launch the contest in September. All the winners will be announced in November/December, and the wraps will be installed in Spring 2024. Osborne next asked the group about ideas for the Fall Sweep Event that will be held later this year. The group thought about locations and tasks that could be completed during the event, but at this time everyone will need to come back to next month’s meeting with some suggestions. The Fall Sweep Event is a requirement of Keep Texas Beautiful, and this year the event must be held between September 11 - November 20, 2023. The Committee then received an update on the Keep Texas Beautiful Conference from Osborne and Orsag. They both stated that the event was very informative, and they enjoyed the classes. Both were excited to receive the City’s recognition for the Keep Texas Beautiful Silver Level Certification for 2023. Osborne also mentioned that she led a Public Art Panel Discussion for one of the sessions. Orsag next gave a summary of all the current Eagle Scout Projects that are being completed for the City. The Bat Houses were installed in April and have held up well. The Bee Hive project has been held up with the temporary closure of the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center. Once the Park reopens later this year the Bee Hive will be installed at that location. Also, the Chimney Swift Bird Tower has been progressing over the past few weeks. Construction is underway at his home and the tower should be installed along the Magnolia Creek Hike and Bike Trail in August. Finally, the plans have been approved for the Pollinator Garden at Hometown Heroes Park. Over the next few weeks the Eagle Scout will be securing donations and supplies. The construction of the garden is scheduled to take place in August. Osborne gave an update on City Art Projects. The mural at Lynn Gripon Park at Countryside Pavilion has been completed. Now we are looking to have the artist do another mural under the Bay Area Boulevard Bridge at the same park. Also, we are looking to create new park signage at Countryside and hope to have it in place once all the park renovations are completed later this year. New gateway signage was also shown to the Committee. These signs that are placed at major entry points to the City would have new wording/font and have the sailboat logo removed and replaced with the LCTX logo. One of the traffic signal box panels has been recently painted. This box showcases a bluebonnet and can be seen at the corner of League City Parkway and Magnolia Meadow Lane. The design for the mosaic art at the Rustic Oaks Park Pavilion has been completed. The artist will begin work soon, and the piece should be installed later this year. Finally, the group was presented with a rough draft of a logo for the Keep League City Beautiful Committee. Discussion was held on some suggested changes to the logo. The updated version will be brought back to the group next month. Osborne also noted that a new web page has been created for the City. It’s called League City Listens and will go live to the public in the next few weeks. This page will serve as a voice for citizens to leave ideas/suggestions/comments on upcoming projects, etc. that relate to the City. Also, the group was told that a large mural project is in the works for the shopping center located on the corner of I-45 and FM 518. Several members of the Committee then provided comments to the group. Richard Williams mentioned that the White Linen Night Event was excellent and was very well organized. Beth Sears stated that she received a lot of positive feedback about the White Linen Night Event. She also informed the group about Kayaking/Scuba/Fishing opportunities at Gun Range Lake. Dave Bowman said that he will miss the August meeting but hopes he can participate by way of Zoom. He also let the group know that he attended the Challenger 7 Memorial Park Public Meeting for the proposed park renovation project. He mentioned that only 5 people were in attendance. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM.
