Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee
6:00 PM
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Beth Sears. Present were Frank
Zgonc, Jill Reason, Jackie Liddell, Richard Williams, Dave Bowman, Beth Sears, and
Casey Richard. Also present for the meeting was Director of Communications and
Community Engagement Sarah Osborne and Parks and Cultural Services
Coordinator John Orsag.
A motion to approve the minutes from the March 5 meeting was made by Richard
Williams and seconded by Frank Zgonc. All present agreed to approve the
minutes.
Osborne, Orsag, and Richard Williams then gave an update about the FeatherFest
Art Event that will be held in League City during the upcoming 2024 Galveston
FeatherFest. This event will feature 100 bird paintings to be created by local
artists and installed at the Civic Center’s Public Art Gallery in April during Spring
Migration. All canvases have been completed and returned to the office. Some
other important items that were discussed were the following:
- Osborne went over job duties and assignments for everyone for the April
18 opening night event.
- Osborne also went over the schedule of events and activities for the April
18 event.
Osborne then led a discussion about Saturday Jazz Nights. She noted that the
March event was just as successful as the February event. There was a large
attendance for the lecture and the concert. It was estimated that there were over
700 in attendance for the concert. All the minor issues with lighting and sound
from the first concert were worked out for the March concert. The final lecture
and concert will be held on April 27. So far there are just a handful who are
signed up for the lecture.
Osborne next talked about the Traffic Box Art Contest. The Traffic Department
has given us 6 of the 9 traffic box locations so far. The vendor who will complete
the wraps is ready to go and we will also be completing the vendor agreement
soon.
Richard Williams and Osborne informed the Committee about the upcoming
White Linen Night Event. The event will be held on Saturday, June 8. The White
Linen Night Committee will be holding an upcoming meeting soon. So far there
are over 50 art vendors who have been approved for a booth.
Osborne then gave an update on City Art Projects. She mentioned that the
League City Public Garden mural has been completed at Hometown Heroes Park,
but work has just started on the other wall that will feature large Strawberry
plants. This should be completed this month.
Orsag next gave the group an update about nature and conservation projects and
events. It was mentioned that the Nature Center has finally reopened after being
closed for several months due to the new waterline project. Orsag then
mentioned the following upcoming items and events:
- We received the $600 grant check from the Native Plant Society of Texas to
purchase native pollinator plants for the pollinator gardens at the Nature
Center (the plants will be purchased soon).
- Benoit Prairie Preserve Workday: Wednesday, April 3, we will work with
volunteers from the local Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists to remove
invasive species on the property.
- Bay Area Plant Exchange Plant Swap will be held on Saturday, April 13, in
the Civic Center parking lot.
- Earth Day: Monday, April 22, we will hand out native tree seedlings to the
public at the Library.
- Keep Texas Waterways Clean: Saturday, May 11, we will host a volunteer
cleanup event at the Nature Center along Clear Creek.
- Canvus park and art products: Looking to place an order for some of our
Parks and Hike and Bike Trails.
Richard Williams then told everyone that plans for the future Veteran’s Art
Gallery are going well. He mentioned that so far they have over 80 pieces for the
exhibit. There will be a meeting later in the month with Veteran’s and City Staff
to discuss the Gallery in more depth.
Several members of the group then had comments to share. Dave liked the new
mural at Hometown Heroes Park as well as the new traffic box wrap. Beth talked
about the possibility of doing a future Art Gallery with local school kids that would
focus on plants and flowers. Richard told the group that there will be a general
meeting coming up this month for the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts
Foundation. Frank then mentioned the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts
Foundation May Workshops that will focus on Songwriting and Social Media. Jill
talked about the search for the new Cultural Arts Director at UHCL and told
everyone about the upcoming Bay Area Ballet performances.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:37 PM.
