Meeting Minutes September 3, 2024 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Beth Sears. Present were Jill Reason, Dave Bowman, Beth Sears, Lisette McClung, Todd Parker, Jackie Liddell, Richard Williams, and Casey Richard. Also present for the meeting was Director of Communications and Community Engagement Sarah Osborne, and Parks and Cultural Services Coordinator John Orsag. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Dave Bowman and seconded by Todd Parker. All present agreed to approve the minutes. Osborne led a discussion about the Free Little Art Gallery Project. This is a project that would include a free-standing box that holds art projects. Femi Russell from Victory Lakes Intermediate School would make sure the box was stocked with artwork. Individuals can exchange, take, leave, or view art from the box. Discussion was held on where to put the art box, and Richard said that the Library would be a good place for it. Osborne then gave an update on City Art Projects. Currently at the Civic Center is an art exhibit from Todd Parker. It’s titled Aero Macro and it includes up-close photos from parts of a plane. The next project that was discussed was the Veteran’s Exhibit which will take place in November at the Civic Center. Richard said that the exhibit is coming along well and that they are down to 137 pieces of artwork. It was also noted that Sunday will be the public event, Monday will be for Veteran’s, and then Tuesday through Friday the art exhibit will be open for anyone. Another item that was discussed was the mosaic art murals that were recently completed by local artist Elizabeth Hornik. She finished 2 large pieces of art that are nature themed. One was installed on the bathroom building at Heritage Park. The other one will go up at another City Park soon. The final art item discussed was the free Concert in the Park. This event will be held on September 6, from 6 PM - 10 PM, at League Park. The performance will be from the Southern Shanks Band. Orsag next gave the group an update about nature and conservation projects and events. It was noted earlier in the meeting by Sarah that there is no new update on the GoCanvus park products. Orsag then mentioned the following items, projects, activities, and events: - Cleanup Event: There will be a Cleanup on September 28, at 8 AM, at the Kilgore-Davis parkland at the end of Kansas Avenue. Online registration for the event will take place in early September. We will need 60 volunteers. This event will be the Fall Sweep activity for 2024. - Music Friendly Texas Community Certification: This item has been progressing slowly, but the Memo of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by the City and is now waiting for the final signature from the Governor. Once the Governor signs the MOU we will form our local Music Advisory Committee. - Fall Plant Swap: We will have a plant swap on October 12, at 8 AM, in the Civic Center parking lot. - Dick Benoit Prairie Event: We will have a Workday at the Dick Benoit Prairie Preserve on October 2, at 8:30 AM, with Texas Master Naturalists. - Eco Fest: We will have Eco Fest on November 2, at the League City Community Center. Osborne then talked about the Artists in Residence Program. A revised handout was passed out that provided an overview and update on the Program. The timeline for the program will be 9 months, and we are looking to have the first group participate from April 1 - December 31, 2025. To make that happen we would need to get information out to the public in November or December of this year and then have an information session in January 2025. Other items that were discussed were the following: - Application Process - Rules and Regulations: No smoking and allow an artist to resubmit for another residency. - Artwork Disciplines: Add Textiles and Jewelry, but Sculpture will be limited to 3D work. - Application Form: The artist will provide a workshop 3 times over 9 months. - Artist will receive: Space to work, open house events, City will promote the artist/artwork on City social media, print, City Matters, City website, etc. Several members of the group then had comments to share. Richard announced that the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation have joined the Chamber of Commerce. He also stated that the bird images have been printed on aluminum and are ready to be picked up from the printer. Richard also expressed concern that kids could hurt themselves on one of the new metal sculptures. Dave asked if the City could move the longhorn from the Police station. Richard then noted that the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation was having difficulty trying to communicate with its members. They are now setting up a website that should help with this issue. Osborne then told the group that the Kendra Scott store at Baybrook Mall is having a fundraiser that will benefit the League City Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation in November. The meeting was adjourned at 7:23 PM.
