Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee

Meeting Minutes October 1, 2024 Keep League City Beautiful Citizen Committee 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order at 6:01 PM by Beth Sears. Present were Dave Bowman, Beth Sears, Lisette McClung, Todd Parker, Jackie Liddell, Frank Zgonc, Richard Williams, and Casey Richard. Also present for the meeting was Parks and Cultural Services Coordinator John Orsag. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Richard Williams and seconded by Dave Bowman. All present agreed to approve the minutes. Orsag talked about the upcoming League City Eco-Fest. It will be held on Saturday, November 2, at the League City Community Center from 9 am to 1 pm. There will be vendors and educational classes for the public as well as a native plant sale and free trees while supplies last. We would like for Keep League City Beautiful to have a booth at the event but we need volunteers to man the booth. Orsag then told everyone about the Keep League City Beautiful reapplication process. The terms for Richard, Dave, Beth, Frank, and Jackie are up for renewal at the end of December. Everyone said that they had already reapplied except for Dave. Dave will reconsider reapplying. Richard gave an update on the Veteran’s Expo and Art Gallery. They need help hanging the Art Show on November 7, 8, and 9, at the League City Civic Center. The Veteran’s Expo will take place on November 10 and 11, also at the League City Civic Center. So far there are 14 non-profit groups to benefit Veteran’s that will be in attendance. Rick asked for volunteers to come to hang the show. There are 100 items that need to be hung on the walls. The City is supplying 4 display cases to show items that cannot be hung on the walls. Richard next led a discussion about upcoming Civic Center Art Exhibits. From December to March will be ‘Small Works by Great Minds’. This is artwork that will be 11x14 or smaller. All artwork must be dropped off to the City by November 14 and be wired and ready to hang. Then from April to July 2025 will be an Art Show by Dickinson ISD students. After that time there will be opportunities for some other types of Art Shows. Lisette talked about having the Outdoor Painters Society do a “fresh paint” of painting historic League City. Beth then mentioned the Native Plant Society working with local school district students to paint and sketch native plants. After the discussion was over Richard then noted that the metal reproduction of the bird art had been completed. The Patrons of the Parks and Arts Foundation would like to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony once the metal panels are installed. Orsag then had an update on City Art Projects. The large mural at the corner of FM 518 and I-45 will finally begin in March 2025. It was then noted that the annual City budget had been approved and that there would be $150,000 available from Park Dedication Fees and $100,000 available from HOT Funds for Art Projects for FY 2025. Dickinson ISD has agreed to create designs for additional traffic box wraps in 2025. The White Linen Night Poster Contest is still ongoing and all entries are due by the end of October. This coming weekend will be the League City Music Festival at Walter Hall Park on October 4-5. There will also be a free Concert in the Park on October 20 at League Park. The GoCanvus park product order will be delivered in November. Once the benches and picnic tables arrive, we will need to meet with several artists to see how and when they can be painted. Finally, Dave suggested the idea of installing trash cans around the City in high-traffic litter areas. They would work like an adopt-a-barrel program where an individual would collect the trash from one of the barrels 1-2 times a week. The group liked the idea and Jackie said that maybe a high school organization could adopt a barrel and Beth mentioned that maybe the Boy Scouts could build and adopt one as well. Orsag next told the group about nature and conservation projects. He mentioned the following items, projects, activities, and events: - Fall Sweep Cleanup Event: Was held on September 28, at the Kilgore-Davis parkland at the end of Kansas Avenue. Had over 40 volunteers help clean up the property. - Music Friendly Texas Community Certification: The Memo of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by the City and is still waiting for the final signature from the Governor. Once the Governor signs the MOU we will form our local Music Advisory Committee.  - League City Garden Club Planting Events: Planted 25+ native pollinator plants at the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center. These plants were purchased from a $600 grant that we received from the Native Plant Society of Texas. We will meet again on October 8 at Hometown Heroes Park to finish planting the 10-15 remaining native pollinator plants. Orsag then talked about the Artists in Residence Program. He mentioned that it was moving along well. There was no discussion or questions from the group. The floor was then open for member comments. Lisette announced that she was hosting an Art Show and Sale next to Opus Ocean Grille on October 5 from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm. The meeting was adjourned at 7:06 PM.
