Library Board of Trustees Minutes April 13, 2022 Held Remotely Liberty Lake Municipal Library 1pm The meeting was called to order by Brad Hamblet at 1:01pm. In attendance: Tim Olsen, Brad Hamblet, Teresa Tapao-Hunt (Trustees), Jandy Humble (Library Director), Jen Camp (Interim City Administrator) • Minutes from the March meeting were approved as published. Reports 1. City Administrator Report –  The city has hired a Communications Specialist David Goerner  The city has a new commission – Community Engagement Commission 1. Director Report  Hired a new Teen & Adult Services Librarian – Mikayla Kittlesvead. She started yesterday.  Laptop & Hotspot checkout will begin next week. These were purchased with monies the board requested from council.  The Friends donated a MAC family pass to the library  Upcoming programs in April – Childrens crafts, Teen Art Journaling (taught by community member), Adult Watercolor (taught by community member) 1. Friends of the Library Report  Fundraisers for the Friends : Veterans Quilt. Friends are selling tickets to a drawing for the quilt.  Soiree Wednesday July 13th @ Liberty Lake Winery  Booksale will take place June 17&18th at the library 1. City Council Report  Tom Sahlsberg newly appointed to the council  A citizen brought their book reconsideration to the council at the March 26th meeting during citizen comment.  Trailhead update Ongoing Business • Trustee Member openings : Shawna Deane & Kim Girard will be confirmed at the next city council meeting. • State Library Grant – Jandy attended webinar. To receive a matching grant the library must reside in its current building or a new building for the next 10 years. Will educate the council on this possibility at the Community Assessment Presentation. • ARPA Laptop Update – The laptops and hotspots are ready for checkout out. • Community Assesment Presentation – Brad, Tim & Jandy will present to council at the April 19th meeting. Jandy will answer any additional questions the council may have on the grants, updates to the library facility or programming. • Book Reconsideration Update – The Book Reconsideration will be an action item on the city councils agenda. Jandy has sent a packet of information to each council member. The council will be asked to uphold the boards decision to retain the material. City attorney will lead the discussion. Jandy will be there to answer questions the council may have. • Collection Development Policy Review: Book Reconsideration Section. The board reviewed changes to the policy. The policy will include a new form for the patron to fill out. The complaint will be reviewed the the librarian and the library director. If an appeal is made it will go to the library board to review. The library board will have the final say over if the book remains in the collection. The city attorney has verified the council only has financial say over the library. The collection is overseen by the librarians and the library board. The board would like to bring this policy back as an action item for a vote at the May board meeting. Edit 5/5/22 – The policy will be reviewed in its entirety over the next few months before the board votes on any changes to the policy.
