Kimberly.
PRESENT: Kris Graff, Jim Moes, Marcia Trentlage, Rose Vander Velden , Lori Vanderloop.
EXCUSED: Amanda Fletcher, Ben Schultz.
OTHERS PRESENT: Beth Carpenter, Ann Hardginski.
Trentlage moved, seconded by Vander Velden, to approve the minutes of the May 15, 2012 meeting. Motion
carried. Vander Velden moved, seconded by Graff, to approve the May 2012 invoices. Motion carried. The May
financial and statistics reports were discussed.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Carpenter reported that Summer Students, Brianna Hardginski and Jenna Hennessey, have started
their schedules and have been invaluable help at both libraries. Liz Kauth’s last day was June 5.
Potential candidates for the open position will be interviewed later this week. Carpenter commended
staff for covering the schedule and managing the incredibly busy days on top of that.
Jim Hietpas entered the meeting at 4:40 p.m.
Werner stepped down as Library Supervisor at the end of May. Carpenter will not be replacing the
open Supervisor position at this time. Staffing challenges were discussed. Monthly supervisor and staff
meetings continue. The May staff meeting included fire alarm training at the Kimberly Library, as well
as AED and bloodborne pathogen training with Al Schaefer. The June meeting will focus on customer
service.
Youth Services Librarian, Ann Hardginski, and Library Supervisor, Judy Clark, received their annual
reviews this month. Both were commended for leading by example and for going above and beyond in
their work efforts.
Carpenter has attended webinars on library security and community engagement. She also attended
the 1st annual Lake Superior Libraries Symposium in Superior, Wisconsin, where she presented a
session on adopting technology in libraries.
Issues with kids at the Kimberly Library have calmed down since school let out. Carpenter commended
staff, especially Hardginksi, for being persistent and firm when dealing with the problem. Carpenter
asked if the Board would like to pursue trying to collect delinquent accounts via tax bills, if possible.
Discussion followed. Carpenter will gather more data and will include the topic on a future agenda.
A new color copier will be delivered to the Kimberly Library this week, which will be used to centralize
printing and to eliminate an old FAX machine contract. All copiers will now be under one service
vendor for maintenance.
The FOLKS meeting schedule for 2012-2013 has been posted on the library website. Their next meeting
is scheduled for September 14th at 9AM.
Carpenter reported on adult programming. Adult registration for the summer reading program is
above 375 registrations, surpassing last year’s numbers. The grand prizes this year are a Kindle Fire and
a bed & breakfast gift certificate.
Hardginksi and Carpenter have the acquisitions module working well now for ordering, receiving, and
tracking materials expenditures. Cataloging and processing workflow is much improved as a result.
OWLSnet will be upgrading to a new circulation system, Sierra, sometime this Fall. Carpenter will
implement the patron signature pads at that time.
The Little Chute Library GASB inventory has been completed. Carpenter reported on a meeting she had
with Al Schaefer and Kendra Scherg from the Kimberly Area School District regarding the high school’s
Little Free Libraries project.
Progress has been made with the help of Rick Krumwiede (OWLS) on the space needs study. Basic data
has been gathered, and Carpenter will be continuing to work on the project. Carpenter will also be
working on the annual budget soon. She reported on library needs, including staffing and materials.
Carpenter also reported on ways that costs have been cut by changing book vendors, streamlining
printing operations, processing changes, and by purchasing locally when possible.
Work continues on the library’s new website with thanks to Evan Bend and Bradd Hintz at OWLS.
Carpenter reported on upcoming vacation time.
Carpenter issued a challenge in May for a donor to step forward with a $1000 donation for the library if
she would face her fear of bats at the July 18th children’s program on Egyptian fruit bats by wearing a
bat “bib” and having a bat hang on her. Trustee Hietpas found anonymous donors, so Carpenter will,
indeed, be wearing a bat at the July program. Special thanks go to the donors for their support of the
library!
Trentlage commented on a discussion she had at the Kimberly Area School District regarding the Little
Free Libraries project. Discussion followed. Graff offered assistance representing the library at school
district meetings. Discussion followed.
YOUTH SERVICES REPORT
Hardginski reported on visits to schools, library tours, and other efforts to promote the summer reading
program throughout the month of May. This year’s program offers 8 grand prizes for kids and 6 for teens.
Cheyenne the pot-bellied pig was a huge hit in May with 139 people in attendance.
Programs for the summer reading program are off to a great start with 69 people attending Rick Chrustowski’s
Passport to Nature kick-off, 552 attending 2 performances by Rondini, and 48 attending the Pajamas & S’mores
story time. Little Chute Elementary summer school classes have visited the Little Chute Library this week. Future
programs include Randy Peterson, Game Day, and Artsy Smartsy crafts on Fridays.

NEW BUSINESS
Nominations were opened for election of officers. Trentlage nominated Jim Moes to continue as President.

Carpenter reported on a recent request from Compassionate Canines, Inc., the organization providing the
Pooches and Pages therapy dog reading program at the Little Chute Library during the school year.
Compassionate Canines is asking that a Letter of Engagement and Liability Waiver and Release be signed by each
library participating in their program. Carpenter has consulted Attorney Koehler and Administrator Hammatt for
assistance. Suggestions for change in language on the Waiver have been sent to Compassionate Canines, and
Carpenter is awaiting a response. There was a consensus for Carpenter to continue toward a resolution with
Compassionate Canines, Inc.
