MINUTES AND REPORTS
Trentlage moved, seconded by Vander Velden, to approve the minutes of the October 16, 2012 and October 29,
2012 meetings. Motion carried. Graff moved, seconded by Fletcher, to approve the October and November
2012 invoices. Motion carried. The October and November financial and statistics reports were discussed.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Carpenter shared concerns regarding support for administrative tasks and youth services needs. Staffing remains
an issue, and changes will need to be made to prevent burn-out of valuable employees. Discussion followed.
Upcoming adult programming includes a visit from Elvis on his birthday, January 8, 2013 at the Little Chute
Library, a new Lunch and Learn Health Series provided in partnership with the HOV YMCA at the Kimberly
Library, and Creative Community which will take place on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Little Chute
Library.
Carpenter has made several presentations in recent months for Wisconsin library systems. Topics have included
Google tools and keeping up with technology. Carpenter has been appointed co-chair of the 2013 Wisconsin
Library Association annual conference which will take place in Green Bay.
In the past, the library has been covered under the heading “Leisure” in the Village of Kimberly budget.
Trentlage met with Administrator Hammatt to discuss this, and an alternative heading, “Culture, Recreation, and
Education” was agreed upon for the future.
YOUTH SERVICES REPORT
Hardginski reported on recent events, including the Vote for Books Campaign, Toddle Drive-In, movie showings,
Clifford’s birthday party, and a holiday craft workshop. The first 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Graduation
ceremony was celebrated by 50 families. Hardginski surveyed participants to gather perceptions about the early
literacy program.
Hardginski also reported on activities with area schools, including preschool tours for Little Chute Elementary
and a visit to Little Chute High School, and a new book club for middle school students in Kimberly. Holiday
break movies are scheduled, and upcoming programs in the new year include Winter Tale Story Times and a
celebration of Caldecott Award-winning books.
OLD BUSINESS
Brown County Library requested a delay to the decision to deny library privileges to Brown County residents
from January 1 to March 1, 2013. Discussion followed. Trentlage moved, seconded by Vanderloop, to deny the
request and to continue with the plan to deny privileges to Brown County residents as of January 1, 2013.
Motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS
Several projects were unable to be completed this Fall due to Director Carpenter’s health issues. Carpenter
requested 2012 budget allocations to be considered for completion in 2013, including two donations from
patrons for materials in honor of loved ones and remaining funds designated for a shelving project in Kimberly.
Discussion followed. Moes asked that the request be moved to the January 2013 meeting for consideration.
Issues with children after school have returned to the Kimberly location. Several bans have been issued to
students who have been banned more than 3 times in the past. Carpenter asked for support of a process to ban
for a full year if repeat offenders return only to be banned again. There was a consensus to do so. Staff is
considering other options for making after school computer use more manageable, including moving the public
computers closer to the circulation desk.
Carpenter reported that Attorney Koehler has reached an agreement with the Compassionate Canines legal
representative regarding their request for a signed Letter of Engagement and Liability Waiver and Release. Graff
moved, seconded by Trentlage, to have Carpenter present the approved documents for signing to the Village of
Little Chute Board of Trustees. Motion carried.
ITEMS FOR FUTURE AGENDAS
The following items were offered for inclusion on the January meeting agenda: action on the Community
Academy’s request for endorsement; review of Library Plan; 2012 budget adjustments.
Trentlage moved, seconded by Vander Velden, to adjourn the meeting at 6:05 p.m. Motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Beth A. Carpenter
