Minutes of the Meeting of the Kimberly-Little Chute Public Library Board January 15, 2013 The meeting was called to order at 4:34 p.m. by President Moes at the Gerard H. Van Hoof Library in Little Chute. PRESENT: Amanda Fletcher, Kris Graff, Jim Moes, Tamara Talsma, Marcia Trentlage, Rose Vander Velden, Lori Vanderloop. EXCUSED: Jim Hietpas. OTHERS PRESENT: Beth Carpenter, Barbara Fleming. Tamara Talsma, the new Library Board member filling the vacancy left by Little Chute community representative Ben Schultz, was introduced and welcomed. MINUTES AND REPORTS Graff moved, seconded by Trentlage, to approve the minutes of the December 18, 2012 meeting. Motion carried. Trentlage moved, seconded by Fletcher, to approve the December 2012 invoices. Motion carried. The December financial and statistics reports were discussed. DIRECTOR’S REPORT Carpenter reported on the latest activity surrounding the Brown County Library bill to Outagamie County. Discussion followed. Carpenter is working with Administrator Hammatt on banning 2 individuals from the library and municipal complex and grounds. Discussion followed. Recent adult programming included Elvis’ birthday party on January 8th and the Lunch & Learn health series. Carpenter represented the library at Hallmark Place’s Expo Day, where she shared information about the library’s services and programs. Upcoming programs include Creative Community and a program on aromatherapy in February. Progress is being made on Fox Cities Reads with a launch coming up on February 21st or 27th at Heckrodt Nature Preserve. This year’s author will be visiting the Fox Valley during Earth Week in April. Authors slotted to come to the library during the Book Festival include Jess Riley, Barbara Joosse, W.H. Beck, and Susanna Daniel. An initial list of other Festival authors is posted on the Festival website. Carpenter will be attending an AAC meeting this week, and reported on issues with Sierra after an upgrade, as well as updates being made to all library computers for the latest java vulnerability. Carpenter will be working on the new library website with Evan Bend at OWLS on January 25th and will also be starting work on the 2012 annual report. Barbara Fleming, FOLKS President, reported that their next meeting is February 8th and that FOLKS will be discussing larger fundraising efforts for the coming year. YOUTH SERVICES REPORT Carpenter shared a report on youth services activities from Ann Hardginski. The Pooches & Pages agreement has been signed by the Village of Little Chute President, so that program is back on the schedule and will run from February through April with room for 20 readers each month. Winter Tales Story Times are off to a great start with an average of 54 people in attendance each week. An afternoon “school’s out” movie will be shown on January 18th in Little Chute, and a new series of Tween Scene programs will be offered in Kimberly during the month of February including crafts such as paper airplanes, a chocolate event, duct tape wallets, and food crafts. Hardginski’s report noted special thanks to Library Assistant, Angela Schneider, who has been a great help with planning the programs. Other upcoming events include a Pajama Story Time featuring Caldecott winning books in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Caldecott award, 8 weeks of family story time beginning January 30th, and “Take Your Child to the Library Day” on February 2nd. Performers are already lined up for the 2013 summer reading program, and Hardginski is working on teen program planning and designs for this year’s reading records. OLD BUSINESS The Community Academy is seeking an endorsement from the Library Board based on their presentation to the Board at their December meeting. The charter school concept and concerns for library staff were discussed. Moes moved, seconded by Vanderloop, that the library supports the concept of the Community Academy in the proposed room of the Civic Wing, but can make no promises regarding the provision of any services & resources above and beyond what is provided to non-charter school patrons. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS Each March, the library participates in Help for the Homeless, a drive to collect toiletries and cleaning products for 43 local crisis agencies. Carpenter requested offering fines amnesty in 2013 from February 22nd to March 17th to encourage residents to both contribute to the drive and to clear their library account of outstanding fines. Contributed products would be counted as payment on up to $5 of fines, but not as payment on bills, lost or damaged materials. Trentlage moved, seconded by Vander Velden, to approve Carpenter’s request. Motion carried. Carpenter presented a review of progress on the goals & objectives of the Library Plan. Discussion followed. ITEMS FOR FUTURE AGENDAS The following items were offered for inclusion on the February meeting agenda: Annual Report review & approval, 2012 budget adjustments.
