Fox Valley Metro Police Department Police Commission Meeting Minutes July 21, 2020 Commissioners Present: Scott Schommer Sue Brown Mark Verhagen Jason Weber Excused: Jason Nate Bill Van Berkel Dept. Members: Daniel Meister , Chief of Police Kelly Vanden Heuvel, Administrative Manager Public: None The meeting was called to order at 6:00pm and roll call was taken. Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Mark Verhagen to approve the minutes from the February 11, 2020 meeting. Sue Brown seconded the motion. The motion carried, 3-0. Public Appearances to Address the Police Commission None Chief’s Report • The new squad purchase has been postponed/temporary cancelled due to the pandemic and the anticipated financial impact to the villages. • Three new officers began in December of 2019 and competed the FTO process in March. Each is currently assigned to one of the three shifts. • Two CSOs were hired and began in March. They are taking minor call including parking and other ordinance violations, animal calls, and lost and found. Each works around 20 hours per week. • K9 program – working to establish a non-profit K9 foundation. Four individuals in the community have expressed interest in being on the founding board for the program. The first meeting is set to take place on July 30, 2020. The fundraising target is $90,000 for the first year. The department is working on an agreement with the union and then the next step would be to name a handler from within the department. • National Night Out has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. • 2020 call volume has been down due to the safer at home orders and school not being in session. 2018-2019 call volume had been up 3-5%. • A Eugene Court property owner was issued a chronic nuisance premises letter. The property met the threshold of three calls needing enforcement action within a year. The property owner is working on correcting the issues. Commission President Communications None Closed Session A motion was made by Jason Weber to adjourn to closed session at 6:16pm. Mark Verhagen seconded the motion. The motion carried, 3–0. A motion was made by Sue Brown to return to open session at 6:23pm. Jason Weber seconded the motion. The motion carried, 3-0. Action from Closed Session No action on closed session required. Schedule of the Next Police Commission Meeting The next Police Commission Meeting will be at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 in the S2/S3 Rooms at the Village of Little Chute Civic Center, 625 Grand Ave, Little Chute.
