Willow Basket workshop

LIVERPOOL COMMUNITY WILLOW BASKETRY WORKSHOP on August 16, 2025 from 10am to 4pm with Bonnie Gale The Village of Liverpool is pleased to announce a COMMUNITY WILLOW BASKETRY WORKSHOP taught by Bonnie Gale, nationally recognized willow artist. The Workshop will be held on Saturday, August 16. The class hours are 10am to 4.00pm. The workshop is open to adults. The event will be held at the Village Hall, 310 Sycamore Street in Liverpool, New York. Due to reduced grant funding, the workshop will be one day in length, this year. The tuition is paid by the CNY grant but participants will need to pay their materials fee of $50 per person. Space is limited. There is a maximum of 12 participants in the workshop and so register early. A list of simple supplies to bring to class will be provided, upon registration. The Tatzca Bread Basket will be taught. This beginning willow basket is a traditional functional shape for holding bread. It is made of white and buff peeled willow. Six groups of rods are woven into a hexagon and then the outside rods are woven around and into the basket. The remaining rods then form an interior hexagon. It is a fun basket to make! Bonnie Gale states: “This is an excellent beginning willow basket and provides techniques used by the immigrant Liverpool willow basket makers. It is a joy to make and demonstrates the intrinsic functional nature of willow.” Bonnie will give very detailed instructions and the basket is made slowly one step at a time. Bonnie has been a professional willow basket maker and artist for the past 42 years. Besides making and teaching, she is also known for her living sculptures and willow caskets. Bonnie will collect the materials fee. No drop-ins, please. In addition, the Liverpool Willow Museum will be open during the workshop from 2pm to 4pm. The Museum is located on the grounds of the Gleason Museum at 314 Second Street. Entrance to the Museum is also free of charge and the public is encouraged to view this very special Museum. Students in this workshop will take time during the day to have a guided tour of the Willow Museum.
