Recruitment & Selection
Ms. Slaten advised that Ms. Taylor-Sherwood is using vacation time this week to facilitate
Supervisory Leadership Academy training for Contra Costa County.
On Friday, May 18th, Recruitment and Selection Division (RSD), and Police Department
personnel will be recruiting at the 31st Annual Law Enforcement Day at the Veterans
Administration Medical Center (5901 E. 7th Street, Long Beach). Ms. Slaten invited
Commissioners to attend the event which honors law enforcement personnel.
Ms. Slaten obtained admission wristbands for Commissioners who wish to attend the annual
Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride Festival, scheduled for May 19 and 20, 2018. RSD staff
will be recruiting at this event.
Ms. Slaten invited Commissioners to attend the graduation ceremony for the Long Beach Fire
Department Recruit Class 2018A, on Saturday, May 26, 2018, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.,
at the LBFD Regional Training Center, located at 2249 Argonne Avenue.
Ms. Slaten thanked Sharon Hamilton for collaborating with RSD Analysts Kris Ramos and
Maria Macias to revise the Job Fairs page on the Civil Service website, to include all
recruiting events.
On Monday, May 14th, Ms. Slaten and Ms. Katsuki attended the 5th annual Port of Long
Beach “Celebrating Education” event, during which the POLB announced the award of
$54,750, in scholarships to local high school and college students.
POLB Summer internships were also announced during this reception. Ms. Karen
Hernandez, a junior at Long Beach Polytechnic High School and an alumni of Youth
Leadership Long Beach, will be performing her eight-week internship in the Civil Service
Department. The Civil Service Department welcomes Ms. Hernandez and looks forward to
working with her this summer.
Sheree Valdoria, Personnel Analyst, provided the Commission with a detailed explanation of
the recruiting effort for the Gas Pipeline Welder/Layout Fitter classification; one of the most
unique positions in the city. The Department of Energy Resources (formerly Long Beach
Gas and Oil), has a critical need for skilled and qualified experts in this field, created by the

recent retirements of two experienced Gas Pipeline Welder/Layout Fitter employees.
Qualified applicants have been scheduled for the two-phase performance examination, which
will be conducted by Civil Service Analysts during weekends in May and June, when
Department of Energy Resources equipment is available and Energy Resources staff are
on-site to supervise the performance piece.
Special Projects
Ms. McDonald provided the Commission with an update of the Performance Management
Pilot Project.
Ms. McDonald also explained a recent request that was submitted to her by a city department,
asking if it was possible to identify the status of a requisition. As the NEOGOV Administrator,
Ms. McDonald researched the issue and created a solution in NEOGOV in which
Administrative Officers will receive automatic email notifications of requisitions generated
within their respective departments. A test project will be conducted in collaboration with two
city departments; Public Works and Library Services.
President Arias inquired if employee performance evaluations were being conducted through
the electronic Performance Management system. Ms. McDonald advised that the project is
still in the laboratory and observation period. The due date for the evaluation of the
Performance Management Pilot Project is June 29, 2018.
Administration Support Services
Ms. Alamo thanked Sharon Hamilton and Keion Bryant of the Special Projects Division for
their assistance in updating the Intranet to include resources for Civil Service as well as other
city departments. Dispositions are now being uploaded to the Civil Service Intranet and
instructional procedures are also available.
Ms. Alamo reported on the two-year filing project that was recently completed by
Administration Support Services staff. Fifty file boxes which housed 2,071 closed employee
files, were moved to permanent storage.
Ms. Alamo provided the Commission with an update of the Civil Service Department budget
as of April 30, 2018.
Executive Director’s Report
Ms. Slaten spoke on behalf of Ms. Taylor-Sherwood who is facilitating Supervisory
Leadership Academy training this week in Contra Costa County. Executive Director
announcements were made by Deputy Director Ms. Slaten under the RSD report.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Commissioner Hicks inquired as to the status of the Special Services Officer position. Ms.
Slaten will relay Commissioner Hicks’ request to Ms. Taylor-Sherwood, for a report on the
SSO classification prior to his departure from the Commission at the end of June 2018.
NEW BUSINESS
As the first Civil Service Commission meeting for the month of July 2018, falls on the Fourth
of July holiday, President Arias suggested moving the CSC meeting of Wednesday, July 4,
2018, to Wednesday, July 11, 2018. President Arias then suggested resuming the regular
CSC meeting schedule with the meeting of Wednesday, July 18, 2018. There was
discussion and agreement among the Commissioners.
The change in the July meeting schedule was confirmed by the Commission, and President
Arias formally announced that the Civil Service Commission meetings for July 2018, will be
held at 8:00 a.m. on:
· Wednesday, July 11, 2018
· Wednesday, July 18, 2018
The Civil Service Commission will then resume their regular meeting schedule in August
2018, with meetings held on the first and third Wednesday of each month.

On behalf of the Civil Service Department and Commission, Deputy Director Ms. Slaten
presented Vice-President Smith Watts with a gift to acknowledge her birthday today,
Wednesday, May 16, 2018. The Commission wished Vice-President Smith Watts a very
happy birthday.
