CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY TELECONFERENCE, 9:00 AM COMMISSION MINUTES Naida Tushnet, Chair Phyllis Schmidt, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Vice Chair William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Robert Finney, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner SPECIAL MEETING At 9:10 a.m., Commissioner Tushnet, called the meeting to order. WELCOME Ted Stevens tried to introduce the new Commissioner, Phyllis Schmidt but she was having trouble logging in to the meeting. We will try again next meeting. ROLL CALL Commissioners Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, Present: William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Don Darnauer said the Pledge of Allegiance. READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Finney read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. GUEST SPEAKER Jeff Williams, Long Beach Center for Economic Inclusion discussed the various networks that support their group. She talked about the hygiene and recreation kits put together and distributed to seniors from all sites. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith Commissioner Darnauer expressed concerns that the Long Term Senior Facilities were not given the opportunity to get vaccinated. Chair Tushnet ammended the motion for the Health Department to assign a staff member or volunteer to reach out to all Senior Buildings and communicate the Vaccine information. Commissioner Smith moved the motion and Commissioner Finney seconded the motion. ACTION: APPROVED All commissioners in favor - Motion Passed. B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioner Valencia -NONE C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter Commissioner Valencia reported on signing up to get the Covid vaccination. D. Housing - Commissioner Tushnet -NONE E. Legislation - Commissioners Finney, Tushnet and Valencia -NONE F. Technology - Commissioner and Chair Finney -NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Smith, and Easter -NONE UNFINISHED BUSINESS None NEW BUSINESS 1) Discussion to have a meeting with the City Attorney regarding positions on pending City policies and ballot measures. ACTION: APPROVED Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission agreed to reach out to the City Attorney for guidance and clarity. 2) Discussion on having Bi-monthly Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meetings until the pandemic is under control. ACTION: DENIED Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission disagreed, and are going to continue to meet monthly. NEXT MEETING The next Webex meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held February 10, 2021 and 9 am.
