REGULAR MEETING - 9:00 am
At 9 am, Commissioner Tushnet, called the meeting to order.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt,
Present: William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Commissioner Valencia led the Pledge of Allegiance.
READING OF MISSION STATEMENT
Commissioner Finney read the mission statement.
Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in
Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation,
technology and the quality of life.
GUEST SPEAKER
Representative, Jacob O'Donnell from Senator Lena Gonzalez’s 33rd District office will spoke about
how the digital divide is effecting the seniors.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
February 10, 2021 minutes were approved.
Motion was made by Commissioner Finney, seconded by
Commissioner Valencia, to approve the February 10, 2021
minutes.
The motion was carried by the following vote:
Yes: 7 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis
Schmidt, William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida

STAFF REPORT
Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens reported that the Long Beach Senior Center in collaboration
with AARP, Partners of Parks and the Gray Panthers were able to operate their "Free" Income Tax
program to seniors at the Senior Center.

E. Legislation - Commissioners Finney, Tushnet and Valencia - Commissioner Tushnet reported the
mayor has submitted his recovery plan to City Council, with a vote scheduled for March 16, 21.
Important proposals for seniors were Digital concerns, Health Issues & Homelessness.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1) Discuss/Approve Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meeting dates.
Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission dates (attached) were approved.
Motion was made by Commissioner Finney, seconded by Commissioner Darnauer to approve the
2021 dates.
The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 7 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney,
Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michelle Valencia and Naida Tushnet.
2) Review/Approve Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Standing Committee
representatives.
Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory CommissionStanding Committees were approved.
Motion was made by Commissioner Smith, seconded by Commissioner Darnauer to approve the
Standing Committee members.
The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 7 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney,
Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michelle Valencia and Naida Tushnet.
