CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION MINUTES TELECONFERENCE, 9:00 AM Naida Tushnet, Chair Phyllis Schmidt, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Vice Chair William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Robert Finney, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner TELECONFERENCE TELECONFERENCE At 9:04 am, Commissioner Tushnet, called the meeting to order. ROLL CALL Commissioners Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michele Valencia Present: and Naida Tushnet Commissioners Don Darnauer and Flora Easter Excused: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Schmidt led the Pledge of Allegiance . READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Finney read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. GUEST SPEAKER Cynthia Howell from the Health Department did a presentation on the CARES Act achievements and Recovery Plan for Older Adult Supports and services. Motion was made by Commissioner Finney, seconded by Commissioner Valencia, to approve the May 12, 2021 minutes. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 5 - Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet Excused: 2 - Don Darnauer and Flora Easter STAFF REPORT Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens reported that he met with the Senior Center Supervisors to discuss the proposed date for opening and starting up the outside exercise classes. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - NONE B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioner Valencia - NONE C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter - Commissioner Valencia reported the City of Long Beach will be offering 2 tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific to anyone receiving their first C-19 vaccination. Commissioner Tushnet reported that Long Beach City needs to add 26,502 additional units and 60% should be affordable housing. D. Housing - Commissioner Tushnet - NONE E. Legislation - Commissioners Finney, Tushnet and Valencia - Commissioner Tushnet reported on a number of proposals that will effect seniors, Broad band access,The American Job Act and raising wages, benefits for in-home care providers and home-Community-based Services Access Act. F. Technology - Commissioner Finney - NONE G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer, Smith, and Easter - Commissioner Smith - NONE UNFINISHED BUSINESS NONE Page 2 of 3 CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY LONG BEACH SENIOR CENTER COMMISSION MINUTES TELECONFERENCE, 9:00 AM NEW BUSINESS 1) LBSCAC to collaborate with the Aging Services. Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission request that they speak to Aging Services and become a formal members. Motion was made by Commissioner Finney, seconded by Commissioner Valencia to approve the request. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 5 - Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michelle Valencia and Naida Tushnet. 2)Letter to City Manager Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission request that a letter be sent to the City Manager in order to draw attention to issues affecting Senior Citizens. Motion was made by Commissioner Valencia, seconded by Commissioner Finney to approve sending the letter. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 5 - Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, William Smith, Michelle Valencia and Naida Tushnet. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Patrons Ms. Reside and Mr. Wollin addressed the commission. NEXT MEETING The next General meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held, June 9, 2021at 9 am. ADJOURNMENT At 10:37 am, Commissioner Tushnet adjourned the meeting. Each speaker is limited to three minutes. The Brown Act prohibits Commissioners from responding to comments on non-agenda items.
