CITY OF LONG BEACH WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9, 2021 SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES Naida Tushnet, Chair Phyllis Schmidt, Commissioner Michele Valencia, Vice Chair William Smith, Commissioner Don Darnauer, Commissioner Robert Finney, Commissioner Flora Easter, Commissioner TELECONFERENCE TELECONFERENCE At 9:07 am, Commissioner Tushnet, called the meeting to order. ROLL CALL Commissioners Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, Present: Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet Commissioners William Smith Excused: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Commissioner Darnauer led the Pledge of Allegiance . READING OF MISSION STATEMENT Commissioner Finney read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life. GUEST SPEAKER Elias Garcia from Public Works discussed mobility. Motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by Commissioner Valencia, to approve the May 12, 2021 minutes. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 6 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet Excused: 1 - William Smith STAFF REPORT Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens was excited to report that the next Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Meeting will be held at El dorado Park. He also discussed the proposed date for opening and starting up the outside exercise classes will hopefully be June 21, 2021. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS A. Community Relations - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - NONE B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioner Valencia - NONE C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter - NONE D. Housing - Commissioner Tushnet - Commissioner Tushnet reported the deadline for rental assistance applications is June 11, 2021 and with the closing of Sears and Kmart, there is an opportunity for mixed-use development, including low and affordable housing on Bellflower. The Plan can be reviewed at longbeach.gov/lbds/planning/advance/housingelementupdate E. Legislation - Commissioners Finney, Tushnet and Valencia - NONE F. Technology - Commissioner Finney - NONE G.
