Commissioner Darnauer led the Pledge of Allegiance .
READING OF MISSION STATEMENT
Commissioner Finney read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for
the culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of
education, safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life.
GUEST SPEAKER
Elias Garcia from Public Works discussed mobility.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
May 12, 2021 minutes were approved.
Motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by
Commissioner Valencia, to approve the May 12, 2021 minutes.
The motion was carried by the following vote:
Yes: 6 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis
Schmidt, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet
Excused: 1 - William Smith
STAFF REPORT
Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens was excited to report that the next Long Beach Senior Citizen
Advisory Commission Meeting will be held at El dorado Park. He also discussed the proposed date for
opening and starting up the outside exercise classes will hopefully be June 21, 2021.

B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioner Valencia - NONE
C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter - NONE
D. Housing - Commissioner Tushnet - Commissioner Tushnet reported the deadline for rental
assistance applications is June 11, 2021 and with the closing of Sears and Kmart, there is an
opportunity for mixed-use development, including low and affordable housing on Bellflower.
