ROLL CALL
At 9:03 am, Commissioner Tushnet, called the meeting to order.
Commissioners Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis Schmidt,
Present: William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida Tushnet
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Commissioner Easter led the Pledge of Allegiance .
READING OF MISSION STATEMENT
Commissioner Valencia read the mission statement. Advocate for new thinking and science on aging for the
culturally diverse population of Older adults in Long Beach and broaden knowledge in the areas of education,
safety, housing, health, transportation, technology and the quality of life.
GUEST SPEAKER
Tony An, civil engineer and project manager from the City’s Accessibility group spoke to the
commissioners about uneven sidewalks, ramps and AC patching repair.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
June 9, 2021 minutes were approved.
Motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by
Commissioner Valencia, to approve the May 12, 2021 minutes.
The motion was carried by the following vote:

STAFF REPORT
Recreation Superintendent, Ted Stevens passed out Calendars for our Senior Programs. He also gave an update on
the HSA hot meal programs and mask CDC guidelines.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Community Relations - Commissioners Finney and Smith - Commissioner Darnauer reported
that on the last Saturdays of the month, The Blues Society have been having free concerts at
Chavez Park from 3-5pm and honor Veterans and Seniors.
B. Crime Prevention and Safety - Commissioners Valencia and Easter- NONE
C. Health - Commissioners Valencia and Easter- Commissioner Darnauer reported that he had
a very hard time filling out the Attestation Form distributed fro the Health Department and had
to deliver the form his self.
D. Housing - Commissioners Tushnet, Darnauer and Schmidt- NONE
E. Legislation - Commissioners Tushnet and Valencia- NONE
F. Technology - Commissioners Finney and Schmidt- NONE
G. Transportation - Commissioners Darnauer and Smith - Commissioner Smith reported that
you are still required to wear masks on public transportation.
NEW BUSINESS
Motion to postpone the land acknowledgement discussion to the August 11th Long Beach Senior
Citizen Advisory Commission meeting.
Motion was made by Commissioner Darnauer, seconded by
Commissioner Finney, to review, discuss and postpone the
land acknowledgment to the next meeting which will be held,
August 11th. The motion was carried by the following vote:

NEW BUSINESS
Motion to discuss and review the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission meeting time
be moved from 9 am to 10 am on August 11th.
Motion was made by Commissioner Schmidt, seconded by
Commissioner Valencia, to discuss the time change of the
Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission Meeting at
the next meeting which will be held, August 11th.
The motion was carried by the following vote:
Yes: 7 - Don Darnauer, Flora Easter, Robert Finney, Phyllis
Schmidt, William Smith, Michele Valencia and Naida

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
Patron, Mr. Sive reported on LBGTQ elder abuse and addressed Ted Stevens on having LBGTQ
Family oriented films in Movies in the Park.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held Wednesday,
August 11 at 9 am at the Long Beach Senior Center.
ADJOURNMENT
At 10 am, Commissioner Tushnet adjourned the meeting.

NEW BUSINESS
Motion to include a statement about the land on which we are meeting at the start of
every meeting:
We acknowledge that we are on the land of the Tongva/Gabrieleño and the
Acjachemen/Juaneño Nations who have lived and continue to live here. We
recognize the Tongva and Acjachemen Nations and their spiritual connection as the
first stewards and the traditional caretakers of this land. We thank them for their
strength, perseverance and resistance. Suggested action: Approve
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
Opportunity is given to those members of the public who would like to address the
Senior Citizen Advisory Commission on non-agenda items. Each speaker is limited to
three minutes.
The Brown Act prohibits Commissioners from responding to comments on
non-agenda items.
NEW MEETING
The next meeting of the Long Beach Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will be held
August 11, 2021 at 9 am. Location - TBD
